Thoughts on getting really low

What do you guys think of just adding another 4 ohm Avatar 4x10?

In this case: My tube head will do the 2 ohms if I plug both speakers into the head. My QSC SS amp won't do 2 ohms bridged, but will do 2-4 ohm channels at 900 watts. Thoughts?

Why not try the 210 / 410 with the QSC unbridged and balance the power to each cab?

I'd get a good preamp with a built-in crossover and a cab equipped with Eminence from the LF series (3015LF or something like that). So you can split the signal and decide the volume of each cab separately. Or you could get rid of the avatar and build one of those nice Fearfuls or similar designs as they'll probably work fine for your application. But for lows you need a big cab and good drivers.

I don't think it will give me the very low oomph that I am looking for. Originally, I was thinking using 2-18"s...but I'm not sure if this will be more or less "air pushing" and low extension than using 8-10s

I don't know much about Avatar cabs but adding more cabs is not a bad idea if your goal is "feeling" the bass. Moving air is your primary goal. While you will feel extremely low frequencies, you can feel frequencies that are above 100Hz even, so the focus does not have to be on the super lows.

Why has nobody suggested the 1515/66? Me thinks that would do the trick nicely....and if the vb-2 didn't push it hard enough, he'd still have the br00talest cab on the market.

Well, our band is sort of a 70's metal throwback, Stoner/Doom band...and I instantly thought of the Sunn Coliseum or the SVT's ( I used to own the SVT CL years ago...nice amp, but heavy!). So, a really good deal on the Peavey VB-2 came up and I took a shot. It's a fabulous amp...especially since I paid $400 for it in new condition. I didn't know that tube amps would really limit the low bass extension.

This bit basically says it isn't super lows you want but actually lots of midbass/upper bass. That's where the 'lows' from that sort of amp come from, the SVT cab is rolling off around 70hz and the amp goes a bit lower but not loads (because there would be no point, since the cab it went with did nothing with that).

All the stuff about 32hz fundamentals is a bit moot, since to have that coming out of your bass, you'd need a pickup in the middle of the string length, and everything in between that and your brain will tend to roll that off more.

What I do with my very low endy but still some definition sound is use a bass rig, and a guitary rig so they can both do what they do best, but I'm covering guitar space too. I used to play in a band detuned to A and used valve and solid state amps, the roll off using valve amps really opened up the headroom and gave a massive sound: bottom is kind of killed by youtube but the general bass presence is there.

Just got back from Guit Center. I played through an Ampeg 4x10hlf. Wow. That was some low bass. I played an Ernie Ball 5 string Stingray. The low B was massive through that cab. The head was an Ampeg Portaflex PF500. I didn't like the head at all, but it did the job of getting the sound to the cab. I never got to turn it up crazy loud, but pretty loud for the quiet store.

I'd look into a low tuned cab and forget about speaker size. One of the very lowest tuned cabs on the market, the Ampeg SVT 410hlf, uses 10"s.

This is your answer right here. I use the Svt 410 Hlf with my 5 string, it's get super low, has tons of tone and gets pretty dam loud

So I took the 2x10 Avatar cab out of my rig and I'm just running the Peavey V-b2 with the Avatar 4x10 (4 ohm) cab. Wow, crazy difference! Much fuller sound. It even seems to sound deeper too. Thanks for your help!
