Thoughts on replacing old Kustom 2x15 speakers w/ 12s?

Sorry to hear the final outcome - I have the Kustom 2x15 cab with the orginal Jensens 16ohm speakers in it. With my Peavey Firebase sitting on top it is more than enough to play just about any mid size gig... Great sound.

Will any of the Carvin 15's be suitable for bass, or do I need to watch out for the excursion on those as well?

Their specs can't be trusted, what with changing the drivers completely while keeping old model number designations. And yes, excursion is just as important with fifteens. I only recommend Eminence, because they give excellent value and you always know what you're getting.

This is a sad story. Okay those Kustoms had a characteristic sound that is worthwhile preserving. The 2x12s were cool too. So for the life of me did the cabinet change it's own speaker diameter from 15s to 12s back to 15s?

Okay, I can explain that part. In short, I'm an idiot.

Longer version: The dude who gave me the cab many years ago told me that it was a 2x15. Before this thread started, I was reading about the old Kustoms, and I learned that they made both a 2x12 and a 2x15 that look something like my cab. So, when this thread started, I was trying to figure out if there was a good way to put two 12's into a 2x15. I was rightly advised not to do that.

Anyway, about halfway through this thread I was eyeballing the front of the cab, and I came to the conclusion that there was no way it had 15's in it. I was just comparing it to a nearby speaker that I knew had a 15 in it, and it didn't look big enough.

That was dumb. That's why they invented rulers.

Since at that point I thought I needed two 12's, I decided to roll the dice with the 12's since they were cheap. Once the 12's arrived and I got the Kustom apart, I found that it did indeed have 15's in it and the 12's would not work. At that point, I got the old guitar cab and tried to turn it into a bass cab. I don't think that my cab design was all that bad for an off the cuff effort, but the 12's weren't going to work no matter what I put them in.
