Thoughts on replacing old Kustom 2x15 speakers w/ 12s?
On the bright side, it looks like you might be able to get some cash for that twangy 12 you've got left as it seems pretty likely that its a guitar speaker.
Yep, that 12 has so much twang that I'll bet it would fetch thousands on the telecaster forum. :p

So what you're saying is that I've managed to live up to my new signature twice now. Great. :(:(

I was just reading the summary that said it would be good for sound reinforcement and bass.

Is it really going to be that bad? :bawl:
Summaries don't mean doodly-squat. It's the specs that count.

Well, dudes, it's back on. I emailed the Carvin ebay person, and they said that it was a bass/PA speaker. It doesn't precisely match any of the spec'ed speakers in the chart given, so I did ask for the actual specs because I would like to know those, but if Carvin says it will work, I'm willing to try it.

This speaker is listed at 4 ohms, while the ones in the table are 8 ohms. Also, the main heading says this has a frequency response of 50-4.5, which also doesn't match the table.

Who knows what I'm getting, but for $27, if they say it works with bass, I'll go for it. I do need two speakers, and money is an issue. :bawl:

I'll let you know how it all works out. Thank you again for all of the help.

Wise men say that to ignore the omen like predictions of X-max and fundamental ability uttered by Bill Fitz, is tantamount to adhering to King Canute's erroneous predictions of tidal activity, i'll warrant!.
Therefore having surveyed the venerable beast with the aid of tools cunningly designed to define measurement, Twood it not be prudent

They can call it anything they care to, but if their spec sheets are at all accurate it's not a driver that will work well on bass. There's a reason why they're blowing them out.
the specs were meaningless to me
And there lies the problem. IMHO before making a purchase one should do the research required to be sure that their silk purse doesn't turn out to be a sow's ear. It may be a driver that perfectly fits your needs. But it may not. There are ways of knowing for sure, and they don't include taking the word of a salesperson who probably knows even less about the product than you do. Caveat Emptor.

You have scared the living crap out of me.

Well, my bass playing buddies, I have failed so massively that dispair.com is making not one, but two posters with my picture on them. It would appear that one FAIL poster is not enough for me.

When we last left off, I was quite pleased to discover that what I thought was a 2x15 Kustom was really a 2x12 cab. Further, the sales guy from Carvin's ebay store had given me his personal assurances that the 12 inch speakers they were blowing out would be perfectly fine in a bass guitar cab. So, I went ahead and ordered the speakers.

On the day they arrived, I brought my cab home from church, got out my screwdriver, and took it apart. There you have poster number one. The cab is a 2x15 after all, and I had just purchased two 12's. There's a special test for guys like me. Two 12's won't fit in a 2x15.

I sat and thought for a while. At least I had the sense to listen to you guys and not modify the bleep out of my 2x15, but I confess that I thought about it a while. I even worked out the design. In the end, however, reason won out and I did nothing at all. I'd make a fine politician.

Anyway, where was I? Oh yes. I had a 2x15 cab and two 12 inch speakers.

I fretted about this situation for a day or so, and then I got a lucky break. One of my buddies spotted the housing for an old 2x12 Behringer guitar combo amp being given away on the local music scene forum. The amp and speakers had been ripped out a long time ago, but the cabinet was functional and free, and I gleefully jumped on it.

I then set about turning it into the ultimate bass cab. I took pictures every step of the way because I just knew you guys would be so proud of me, but now dispair.com just wants the pictures so they can make the posters out of me.

I mean, I ported this thing through where the amp used to be, I put batting in it, I put a back on it, I painted it, I had a wonderful dude hook me up with some custom improvised jack plates, and when I was done, I had a work of art.

Then I plugged it in.

And just like billfitzmaurice said it would, it farted out all over the place like a labradoodle tripping out on Exlax.

I mean, with a six string guitar, it sounds awesome. With a keyboard, it is postively righteous, and with a bass guitar, it totally blows. So, here I am back right where I started--with nothing, and nothing to do but wallow in my own humiliation.

I was strongly advised not to post this story. I was also strongly advised to change my user id and never log in as smoothdave again, but I felt that somewhere along the line, the truth had to be told. Maybe some other bass cab building n00b can learn a lesson or two from my own colossal failure. When billfitzmaurice says to do or not do something, you do exactly as he says. You don't step to the left, and you don't step to the right. You do what he says.

That's what I'm going to do. I'm going to put my 2x15 away again, and when I can, I'm going to outfit with it with a 3015LF and a 6 inch mid-range.

Thank you again to all of you for your advice, and thanks especially to Bill for trying to steer me right.

I'll let you all know when the posters are available.

I hope you at least got an apology from the Carvin Ebay doofus. And you did get a decent guitar cab.

It does sound great with a guitar, and he did email me to let me know that he would see if he could find some 15's that might be more suitable, so that was very nice of him. I appreciate the fact that he's going to try to help me out, and he did say that I could send them back, but like you guys said, I've got a pretty darn good guitar cab now.

Will any of the Carvin 15's be suitable for bass, or do I need to watch out for the excursion on those as well?

Thank you.

With Carvin, who knows?... Back in '07, when several of us started ordering LS1503 PA speakers for bass, I observed them using four different brand compression drivers, in mine and other's cabs, as well as changing the mid driver sub enclosure from a wood built box to a plastic cup. They later changed the 15" driver from Eminence American Standard to some other manufacturer while keeping the model # PS-15 (& showing the same specs I believe).
