I can't speak for jh, but I dereliced mine with a Sharpie. It isn't great looking up close, but it looks fine on stage. The funny thing is that it has begun to rerelic. That makes for some philosophical swirls that none of us want to get flushed in.

If a bass gets "road worn" due to actual road wear and play that's fine and can add character.
I just don't get why someone would pay for a "new" bass that's been beat to hell at the factory to look "relic'd".
If you want a road worn instrument, do it yourself...

+1. Sorry dude, I'm not agreeing with you, but I had to do this!
To me, the funniest thing about RW threads is the fact that people that don't like RWs assume that RW owners bought the bass because of the finish.
I bought this because it sounded great. I really don't care about the finish. I don't think I'm alone here with that.
Yet somehow, it is assumed that I'm a poser because I bought this bass.
Maybe people should close their eyes and listen. Then, you can judge RW basses. But making an assumption on a bass (and a bassist) based on a finish is a very shallow thing. It's something I would expect from a poser. You know, someone who makes a judgement based on a visual cue and who is more interested in how a thing looks than how it sounds. And this sounds to me a lot more like anti RW people than people who have actually bought this bass.
With that, I wish you all a merry Christmas!

I apologize to all the people at Fender who it seems I've been extraordinarily critical of lately, but when they first came out with Road Worn, I thought it was an incredibly stupid idea: to charge a premium for new instruments that looked like they were used? I STILL think its an incredibly stupid idea! If I want a old beat-up instrument, there are plenty available.
So here you go, buy a beaten bass then, Fender is just throwing another option to the market, if you dont like the option is fine, there are thousands of bass players that think that RW are awesome basses, that is fine too.

Love this idea. I am handy with an airbrush and toyed with that idea.
I like the way these basses look either way. I own 2 RW Jazz and a parts bass(RW jazz body) AND I have a RW P on the way. Why? Played one almost by accident without knowing what the heck this series was about. That was in a Sam Ash store. That is why this Road Worn 'hate' around here is so rediculous to me. That experience in Sam Ash turned me into a huge fan based on feel and sound.
The Road Worn 'haters' just come off ignorant to me.
I like Road Worns....de-relic'd AND with added relicing from natural wear. Keep rockin' your Road Worns people!
I think that the above is your perception. My 2008 American Standard Precision, I.M.H.O., beats the snot out of my recently sold US NS-2J Spector (costing well over $2500). That's my opinion. I have never experienced what you are describing when having tried " to become friends" with a Roadworn P or a Nate P bass.

I would love a RW, the Jazz I tried at my LMS was a dream.
I just sold a RW Precision. At the end of the day, I'm just not a fan of P basses (sacrilige, I know), but I will say that it was the best P bass I've ever played, and I've owned 3 and played many more. Light, beautiful neck, great tone. I also personally love the finish. One day I'd like to get a RW Jazz.
