I'm disappointed in the longevity of Blast Cult Low Life strings. I've had a hard time getting the sound I want, and the Low Lifes were as close as I've come as of yet, but coming unwound after less than a year of light playing seems a little unreasonable to me. Not ridiculous, but I'd like to see something that lasts longer. I'm playing traditional and modern rockabilly, with about 50/50 slap and pizz playing. I rarely play arco, though I'd like to develop this skill, it's not so much a consideration for me at this point. I've had to make tonal compromises because I play at relatively high volume in small venues, often with my amp directly behind me and within feet of my bass. Feedback was a major issue. I implemented a 31 band eq which helped but cost me as far as tone. Eventually I switched to a mag pickup, which allows for a fuller sound but more EB sounding, unfortunately, but no feedback issues. Anyway, now I have my Helicore Hybrids back on, which sound good slapped on the E and A, but the D and G have no fingerboard clack at all, even with a clicky. The tone is nice, but tension is a bit high when I've become accustomed to the Low Lifes. I used Velvet Animas for a while, and love the pizz sound, though the slap sound left something to be desired, and being synthetic, mag was not an option and feedback was an issue.
Sooooooo.... I'm wondering what people think about the Superior Tri Cores? Strongly considering a full set. I was able to find a video comparing the E and A to gut D and G's and it sounded pretty good but it's difficult to really analyze a youtube video on computer speakers and get an accurate reflection of tone. Further, there has been little discussion about the sound of the strings when amplified through a mag. So, I'm wondering if any of my fellow TB'ers have experience with these strings? Thoughts? Comparisons? Amplified sound? Longevity? Seems like they've developed a 2.0 version of the string to address durability, from what I gather from the forums.
I'm also open to other string suggestions that would work with a mag.
