I purchased a Shure PGX SM58 ($400) a couple years back. Bought it for some DJ and wedding services, and it was fine for announcements and DJ use. I later gave it to the lead singer to try, and our soundman said it didn't sound as good/open/airy as even a regular wired SM58. Made me wish I spent the extra $50 and got the Beta 58 version of the PGX. I ended up selling it.
He has since been using a Beta87A as his primary vocal mic and we really like it. He wants to go wireless again, but my experience tells me that he needs to at least try the PGX beta 58, or possibly the SLX beta87. The SLX beta87 is over $750. I can't find many reviews comparing it to the wired counterpart, so I'm coming here asking for your opinions on these two mics, expecially compared to the wired versions. Those same mic elements are used on multiple wireless product lines, so I assume that the real money is being spent in the wireless technologies, and you get what you pay for? I could use some real world experiences.
