Thoughts on the Tascam Model 16 mixer

I'm looking at upgrading my Behringer X2222USB board, and started looking at reviews of the Model 16. I like simple, built like a tank, with an analog feel and controls. While I'd like to go with the Model 24, having 10 XLR's and USB direct to my DAW is an improvement (with my Tascam US 16x08 USB I should be fine). Not sure if I really need the built in D. Recorder, but it may come in useful. I think the Pre's on the Model 16 are going to be higher quality. This is primarily for working in my home studio for practice and recording. It also fits within my budget.

The X2222 has worked for me for the last five years or so, using the inserts into the line inputs on my USB interface (US 16x08). The actual USB connection is a stereo feed that sends the Main signal, so not very useful with a DAW.

I was also looking at the Zoom Live Trak units, but started to lose interest when I saw that the individual channel EQ's had to be selected and run from a single master. There are Lots of features and mix options, but that defeats my goal of simple - and short learning curve.

Probably looking to upgrade in the spring or early summer (the Behringer might become part of the band PA). Thought I would reach out and see what the mind bank was thinking.

My main home studio board is an Allen and Heath mix wizard 16:2, which is great because it has direct outs on each channel to feed my daw’s input (behringer umc 1820). So basically, instead of using your inserts you have dedicated direct outs and 6 aux sends for grouping inputs (like multiple drum mics) to one recorder input.

I also use a 1/2 8 track tape machine so grouping definitely happens when recording a band.

those mixers can be a great deal used

The Tascam Model 12 is my favourite mixer/interface ever. I even sold my SSL SiX. Other than the M16 and M24, it is fully digital (I guess I prefer digital in this priceclass). If you don’t need that many inputs- I use it along with a patchbay - it has some advantages over the other Tascams:
Midi
Dry recording the single tracks while still using the comps and eqs for the main mix
Works as a DAW controller

It's growing on me... just watched this review which I found to be pretty thorough.

I'd need to read up on the mode switch functionality. It looks like both the "Live" and "PC" positions send to the USB connection. Never hurts to be up to speed on prospective gear purchases.

Both are choosing the input of the channel. In the live position, it’s the analog input (mic, line or hz), in the pc position, what’s coming via USB (Daw or, for example Spotify etc.).

Gotcha, that's the source not the output. Makes sense. So, all of the output options are available all of the time, Main, Aux's, DAW, Control Room, DR.
