I've been toying with the idea recently of running a split rig with a crossover sending low frequencies (around 200hz and below) to a dedicated bass amp, and everything above being sent to a distorted guitar head (perhaps something like a Peavey 5150, Victory Kraken, even a Marshall or Orange if it worked!) for grindy heavy tones.
I'm particularly into the whole 'Nolly'/Darkglass-esque (I own a couple of their pedals), modern style of distortion, which often resembles a guitar tuned an octave lower. Like many TalkBass members I'm continually looking to improve and refine my sound and so I'm always keen to try different approaches. For sheer experimentations sake, does anyone have any personal use cases or opinions toward this? I've heard of a few producers doing it to good effect - I believe Kurt Ballou of Converge runs this approach live as well in the studio. For my personal use it'd be limited to a Studio approach for now.
