Threaded string tree screw

Hey there,

I have recently been modding my Yamaha bass and have decided, for vanities sake,
to replace the string tree with one found on Fender and Musicman instruments rather than the Strat and tele style one it came with. Simple right?

So I went to remove the screw, which refused to move even an 8th of a turn and as a result have threaded the screw.

What would you say the best way to go about removing it is? If I need to remove the surrounding wood what remedies would you suggest
that won't cause the replacement tree to be forced out by the string tension?

You have "threaded" the screw?? I think you need a more clear description.

Since they come with threads, may we assume that you have destroyed the slot or Philips recess where the screwdriver inserts? That would not be unusual.

But, did did you also break the screw off?

And pics would be helpful.

The screw itself is not broken but like the said the Philips head is stripped meaning the screwdriver has nothing to grip onto.
I apologise for the quality of the picture but I need to buy a new memory card for my digital camera

Take the strings off. The string tree should then be lose enough to be able to use vice grips to clamp onto the screw and remove it without issue.

If you don't want to waste the string tree your going to need to cut a slot into the existing head and use a flat head screw driver.

Use a dremel for best results and steady hand.

Next screw make sure the hole is sized correctly so you don't bind it and mung up the head.

As stated above, loosen or take the strings off and get them out of the way.

Make sure you're using the correct size Phillips screwdriver. Most small screws like that use a #1 size.

To heck with the $1.98 string tree. Grab it with vice grips and rotate it and the screw out. But I think that kind of tree will drop down with the strings removed.??

As said before, make sure the new screw fits the hole, other wise you may break the screw off if its too tight. If the screw is really too big, you could crack the wood.

Bro its easy to get out.
First get something that can cut a little slit in the top of the screw where its lost its head, you can use a Dremel or a tiny little saw .Doing this will give you grip to remove the screw.You can also try just using plyers & turn the heck out of it.
