Maybe the idea is that a brand new bass is attempting to mimic a vintage instrument worth ten times the price. Think new Flea Bass versus original '61 Fender Jazz Bass in shell pink. That's more dishonest to an uneducated consumer than a poorly executed, obvious copy.
Well this place has taught me the valuable lesson that we can disagree without being disagreeable.

First off, consumers need to educate themselves, now more than ever.

But more importantly, I just don't agree with the basis of the statement. Out of 100 buyers of a relic'd instrument that's advertised as such, maybe 1 or 2 will actually think they're getting a real vintage instrument.

If you're talking about situations where unscrupulous sellers take relic'd instruments and advertise them as real vintage, that's a completely different story.

The moderators commented over on Club Fakenbacker, and contacted me personally, im satisfied they intend to apply this new policy in an even-handed and fair way. It will not be retrocative, so the past is the past. I felt it was a topic that needed to be aired, and after 10 pages of discussion, I think it has been. Thanks for comments and contributions All.

Cool.

I wouldn't call them limited though other than being useless for slapping. Yes, rush, beatles, wings, BTO, just off the top of my head of famous rick bass bands.... very different tones and styles from basically one instrument model.

I hear you, but I play a very diverse large song roster in three different types of bands, each with their own set list, and genre, I would find it very hard to justify or even need the Ric voice, hence my calling it limited. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it’s a bad voice, but when you get down to it, while the are few band as you mentioned that made hay with it, by comparison, they are not used much.

I'm closing this now. The OP was answered correctly in the third post, and there are several posts questioning moderation, some even suggesting we are responding to John Hall. :rollno: This isn't that; it's simply an attempt to not promote the sale of counterfeits (not tributes, not basses stopped due to lawsuits,...) of all brands.

Anyway, since this thread is about a policy and not about basses, I'm closing.
