When I read crap like this, I am thinking to the author... Maybe some people don't want your help? Maybe they want you to mind your own business. What makes you think you are better than another person that you feel you need to help them? Maybe you need help?
I am all for self improvement, and for helping people out when they ask for help.... But this kind of thinking is self righteous ego boosting.
I have 3 words to help you advance your career. DO YOUR JOB.
Or 5 words... THE BOSS IS ALWAYS RIGHT.
I hear what you are saying but I got something different from the way Mike presented the article.
Yes, there are fixers that want to jump into every situaltion and make it right. Have you ever just been commiserating and someone jumps in with textbook fixes before you even finish what you are saying? I see it happen here on T.B. (although no one has ever interrupeted me.) Sometimes it is better to just pull back and observe and/or listen. You are right people are not always asking for help sometimes they just want someone to hear what is happening. Also sometimes it is better to let people go through their struggles. If I am always trying to fix people right away it probably is about me. The situation makes me uncomfortable and I want it to go away. That is a good time to pull back and ask myself why the situation makes me uncomfortable.
On the other hand it is a good thing to always try and love the person in front of me. Sometimes it is more difficult than others. That can come out in different ways. Sometimes it means offering my money and/or time. Sometimes it just means a smile, or everything else in between. Yes, everything I do is self motivated on some level, I am a human bieng. Trying to make the world around me a better place is ultimately self motivated. But that doesn't make it wrong.
As far as doing these things to advance my career I'm not so sure. I think I should do my job well becuase I get paid for it. I also try and be a helpful person because that is who I am. Ever hear of the concept of a servant leader?
