thumb position

Is is considered bad technique to put your right thumb (if you're a righty) on the end of the fretboard and finger the strings from there, or is the proper place on top of the pickup?

I think your thumb is fine, though. You'll get a much mellower sound up there near the board and if that's the sound and feel you want, then it's perfect technique!

I put my thumb on the lowest string to mute it when I am playing higher and float it when I'm on the low string.

I usually rest my right thumb on the edge of the fretboard around the 17 fret or so (on a 21 fret bass for example). I naturally gravitated to that position because it felt more comfortable for me. It may not be "proper" technique, but it works for me.

I'm a wierd one and don't usually mount my thumb anywhere, I mainly just float but on occassion I'll mount, and if I do it's on the neck pup.
