Some of the Guilds had them on both sides.Someone once told me he saw a bass with a thumb rest on both sides!
Of course, I didn't believe him.
No one really knows if anybody ever played with their thumb at all.

But upright players don’t use their thumbs on the strings.I read that Leo Fender stuck it there because there were only upright bass players at the time. It makes sense.
Yeah I’ve seen one with two on themNo one really knows if anybody ever played with their thumb at all. People just got used to thinking it was supposed to be there. Even 10 years later when Ric came out with their 4000, they had a plexi tug bar that existed through at least 1972.
