I might use a ramp instead of a thumb rest. But yes, It does could in handy sometime.

You have come up with a rather good idea. 10 people on TB saying no doesn't mean anything. I think with some tweaking and such you could probably be successful doing this.

But, I'm not your marketing man or design engineer so honestly I'll keep my ideas to myself as I'm not going to help make you a million dollars and not get a cut.

Thanks! The nice thing about these is that you could put it anywhere you like. The removable adhesive makes it solid but not permanent. All I know is that I don't like the standard screw-on thumbrest design and couldn't find another design - so I made my own.

I think it's very nice. And I like the idea of placing it so it's the same distance as from the E to the A string. I'd say go for it, although it seems like there is a general reluctance among those who've already responded. (Mandolin players go crazy for these kinds of things, and there is a healthy market for all kinds of doodads, from pick guards to arm rests. Different crowd, go figure.)

I see lots of recommendations for ramps, but personally I think ramps are rather ugly. Your little block, nicely matched to the body wood, is much more attractive to my eyes.

I'm with you - I've got no interest in a ramp on either of my basses. The placement and design are purely utilitarian, though I'm sure I could make them look fancier. Zebrawood or something like that.

I usually rest my thumb either on edge of the neck pick-up, or on the E string right in front of it. If I had a thumb rest bar there, I would probably use it, but it would need to be about the size of the old pull-bar that was on my '65 Jazz and I really don't want to drill into the body of my current Jazz to mount it.

If you look at the pics in the first thread you'll see that I don't screw these in the body. I mount them using a clear removable reusable mounting strip from Scotch. I could make one longer than the ones I have pictured as well.

I put a strip of wood between the PUs on my Jazz bass. Carefully measured, cut, and then final sanded so it just fits in between. Same height as the PUs, held in place with double-sided tape.
Made from scrap, works great.

I've tried the double stick tape but they fall off. Maybe I push too hard but hey I play hard too. So what's the scotch brand tape you're using called, maybe I'll give it another try to see if it's any different or better than the last time I tried it, which was several years ago. I would like to make it reversible. I finally figured out if you just use the absolute smallest headless finish nails you can find they only make a hole that's about a 1/16" across, much smaller than a screw.
