+1 I'll post a pic when I get home, but the flat black is worn off the back of the neck on my Gibson Blackbird in two good sized patterns, and along the body edges where it hits my leg, rubs against the strap, and also where my plucking thumb rests. I guess you could say it just has an honest road worn look.

Anyone know if the Goth TB bodies are solid pieces of mahogany or are they laminated layers of whatever. I'm thinking down the road I would maybe want to strip it down and have a natural wood finish but if it's a mess of layers and layers of garbage underneath there then I'm not going to touch it.

The body is red wood (some kind of mahogany) but the raised sections down the middle are white wood on mine. When I routed for new pickups you could see how the raised center is glued on to the body. I didn't strip the finish so I can't say how many pieces make up the main body.

That's one of the main reasons I don't like plated anything. For me at least, if it can rub off, it eventually will. I don't treat my basses like I probably should. I mean, I don't toss them around and bang 'em up and whatnot but I'm not going to break out the cleaning cloth every time I touch them either. That's part of the reason I was wondering what is underneath the paint on the Goth. If the finish is already coming off where i place my thumb then I might as well go ahead and strip it down but I'm not gonna touch it if it's a bunch of different wood sandwiched together under there. I've made that mistake with toooo many basses before. Looks fugly.

Post us some shots of your Phoenix, it's certainly a 'Bird, of a slightly different feather perhaps, but that's cool!
I don't know much of anything about these basses so I'd appreciate your thoughts on yours very much.

Awww....I meant to do this starting a couple days ago, you know like the 12 Days of Christmas.

Anyway, at least one a day till then ;)

Actually,I was just thinking about getting a Phoenix. Unfortunately,I had to return my Thunderbird Classic because of some problems with it.But I wanted to stay in this club so I settled for a brand new Gibson. I will post some shots next week when I pick it up.

I've played one and it feels very smooth. Neck is pretty slim like a thunderbird. I love the reverse headstock that's what caught my eye in the first place. Sound is pretty basic, IMO, i'd swap the pickups for something better. Also, i'm not a fan of the very long pick guard, specially since the controls are on it which means i can't remove it to have an all black bass. Oh well, it still looks great. IT does neck dive ever so slightly but hey, if you're used to a thunderbird, this isn't any different.

I am kind of interested in picking one of these up, but the pickguard is a turn off. Judging from pics of the back of the bass, the controls must be routed out of the front so it has to have a guard to cover it. :hmm: I guess you could always have a black guard made for it and it would blend in better.
