Thunderbird Club Pt 5

So what is it about Thunderbirds that make you guys like them so? Is it looks? Do they have a specific sound? I know I love my Warwick $$ for the output and the growl it has... I'm starting to like Tbirds for the looks(plus I can get a used Epi one for a good deal). If I do get one of the cheaper Epi models, is there a specific Pickup upgrade that's popular or do people leave them as is. I heard somewhere that the white Epi Tbird has higher output with the chrome pups than the normal burst models with black pups.

Also, is it worth getting an Epi Pro model vs the normal Tbird?

I bought my epi goth model a year ago, and i had a love hate relationship with it. I hated the pickups at first, but when i plugged into a cab, it sounded great. All the midrange i needed plus the thunder bass sound. I love the look of the thunderbird, It's attack as well sleek. I swapped the controls out for a simple kill switch = more output, less fuss.

Also, i never knew how great those stock pickups sounded til i recorded with my band. Unprofessionally with a cassette radio, still turned out great. I love this bass, even if its not my main axe (which is a precision bass copy  )

but to each there own. I kinda like the pro's for the neck through construction and it's different sounding, active vs passive epi birds or gibson. But you can get a closer sound to a gibson, IMO with a pro than the std birds, But if you go for the classic pro, well you'll get gibson at fair price. xD

Hey guys,

Figured if anyone would appreciate this it'd be you fine folks here. My band Bamboo Star just recorded a song called Electric Love (you can find it [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]) and I figured I would theme the look of my custom 'bird to the track!

It's keeping the ball rolling with Shark1's 8 string. I love that bass by the way, and I hope I don't steal your... thunder (been waiting all night to say that), and I hope there's enough room around here for another 8-bird. Here's the latest addition to my flock in Neon Pink.

That's a gorgeous looking 8 string!

Would you care to elaborate a little more about it?
Is it a custom made 8-string, or is it a modified Epi/Gibby? Also is it bolt-on or neck-through?

More pictures would be really nice... :)

Dear all, thanks for this forum in the last 12 months I have gone from having no Thunderbird type basses to owning 3 of them! I don't know whether to say "thank you" or to curse you for the inspiration that you have given me.

I have previously posted pictures of my fenderbird build and of my Westfield T Bird copy.

Just after Christmas I treated myself to a brand-new Epiphone Thunderbird IV pro in Alpine White with a through neck.

I was thinking about having a Thunderbird 8 string made and after seeing some of the pictures here I am more determined than ever to go ahead with this as my next project.

I will let you all know how I get on.

At the moment I'm thinking of having a pickup installation similar to that found on a Gibson EB3 as I like the sound of a neck "mudbucker" as well as that of a bridge humbucker.

I am not sure whether to go with a 32 inch scale neck or a 34 inch.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on this.

I think it's still his fave creation.
I wish he could build full time, he's an awesome craftsman.
