Thunderbird Club Pt 5

Is that one of those old St. George short scale Birds? Looks like one that popped up on Ebay for a while.

You know what? I'm not sure... Lol. I've always thought it was a long scale, but I haven't had it assembled in almost 15 years.

Pretty sure it is 34", but looking at the picture, it looks like a short scale.

I'm going to have to dig it out & measure it now, that is going to drive me crazy! :D

60's Gibson NR necks can be very thin or down right beefy, in general the farther you move in to the decade the thicker the neck front to back. at the nut they are quite narrow 1 7/16". Bachs I have found also vary. I had two of the series II black ones and they had very thin necks like a 60's NR, also 1 7/16" at the nut. The Cherry series III had a much thicker neck, body as well. The Reissue Gibson has a very beefy neck front to back, more like a 70's Jazz bass U shaped neck but even more meat on the back. If you are looking for the NR experience I would go with the Bach, the Gibson while a nicely made bass misses some of the points that to me make up the NR. Gibson's new body is 1 1/2" where as a 60's NR is 1/14". The Bach neck is also much closer to the 60's profile and has the large headstock. Hope that helps!
Hey guys I have a question about non-reverse birds:

What are the neck measurements like? Mainly I'm worried about thickness (I want a thicker neck, something like a standard Jazz neck or a slim P neck). Specifically, I am interested in the Bach Bird. Has anyone got some measurements on one?

and how about the new re-issued Gibsons? what are those necks like?

I have the newest revision Ultra Bass in burst paint. I think its a pretty darn cool looking bass. kind of a Thunderbird/Telecaster cross. The headstock is really cool. It also balances! My big complaint with the design is the neck is both very slim in thickness and its flat. It makes it feel wider than it is and you have to really pinch your hands around them to hold on. Its not comfortable for me. and I have little girl hands!

I'm probably going to sell my Ultra bass. Even though it sounds good (acoustically) with some punch, I just can't get comfortable on the neck.

Thinnest 'bird ever! Great typo. :D

Another vote for the DR Black Beauties. I have used them for several years and really like them.

im gona slap some new strings on soon, and i cant stand the real twangy ones that take ages to settle. are these pretty good? im really looking for that thick tone, nothing twangy or jazzy really, i dont do slap stlye.

one other thing, i know theres a lot of conversation about heavy necks, but wheres best to relocate the strap to stop it?

and cheers for chucking us on the list!

Im thinking of turning my EpiBird Pro into a project bass because its beautiful but not a collectible. I drew up a little picture to show you guys what I would like to get at. Let me know what you think.

I think the DR high beams are bright sounding, and the BB's are toned down versions of the high beams. They are bright, but not too bright to my ears. They almost sound like a nice broken in sounding High Beam string. Hope that helps some.

I just use a really thick padded leather strap and that stopped the neck dive 90%

my strap pin is were the body and neck join, came stock like that

That looks pretty cool! If you are doing such a large guard, I would be tempted to have it follow some of the body curves, at least at the upper section (like where a strap button would be).
