Thought I'd share here...
My '00 Gibson Blackbird has always had at least 1/4 more output and a cleaner, deeper sound than my stock Thunderbird IV- so I had been on the lookout for a set of Blackbird pups to drop in the IV. The IV never sounded bad - just a bit brighter and more defined. But there was such a difference, that I always had to tweak my amp quite a bit if I switched between the two basses. Recently, a member on another forum had posted some pups for sale, and they looked like a match for the Blackbird. After installing them in the IV - I was happy to find they were indeed a dead on match. I have both the Blackbird and the IV now set up with a v/v/t/t/ and three way toggle, so I can roll the neck tone off and combine it with the treble bridge for a thumping low end with enough definition to not get lost. Now I'm a very happy camper to take my IV out and not have to adjust my amp's gain and tone settings!

Yes - DR Black Beauties on all of my Birds. DR says these coated strings are supposed to stay brighter and keep the "new" sound longer - but on my birds - I find quite the opposite to be true. They sound very mellow, and once broken in give the bass a very "woody" almost acoustic/upright tone. I dig 'em...
Been doing some work to my 'bird.
I had a set of SSB4's from a build that isn't ready, so I decided to drop them into my main player. Freakin' FANTASTIC!!
The Duncans are so clear, I swear I can hear the fretwire!! My beat up bass has a whole new life. I'll be putting these pickups in all my Thunderbirds. The route for the stock pups is a hair bigger, so they are definitely an obvious mod, but given the "weapon" look I've been working on for this bass, it works fine.
Other mods I've done are removing all logos, painted the pickguard black and epoxied a skull on, and knocked the gloss off the finish with micromesh. It's not a relic, so to speak, just a beat up (though very well cared for) player. All the "damage" is superficial.
My goal is to build another one to these specs (I've built four so far), and use a thin nitro like a Highway One, and let it relic naturally.
Needless to say, it'll be getting the Duncans as well. I didn't change the pot values, so it has a very crisp high end, which is perfect for my style of playing. When I back off and play fingerstyle, it really sweetens up. Every note is crystal clear. I'm amazed at how high-fi it sounds compared to the stock Epi pups. And yes, I'm aware that the mod cost more than the bass did new!!!
Oh, and I didn't move the strap button. A little neck dive doesn't bother me.

Mahogany body, thick bolt on mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard (but darkend to apear as ebony, because i prefer the look), hipshot hardware and...
old gibson pickups. Not shure how old. i think they are from the sixties because of the 2 screws, and i think they are from nonreversed model because they are chrome, not nickel finished. If anyone can identify them, I'd love to know.

This is a project I was working on, trying unsuccessfully to get it finished before the most recent GTG in Seattle. Note the pick guard:
It really grabs the ambient light, and has a glowing, shimmering effect that the camera somewhat captures, but not very well.
If anyone is interested in something similar, I hope to start a small business making pick guards. If there is interest.
