Okay so i got the idea of having a jack plate on my bird. And i was wondering which out of both options should i do: Stratocaster jack plate on the bird or gibson style bottom placed jack plate. (picture is a epi pro bird, i want a jack plate not

and if strat jack plate gets "more" votes, how should it be placed: parallel with the knobs or more towards the bottom like nikki's spectorbirds

In my opinion, the jack on the Spector never looked right. Not sure why, but I always thought it looked bad. The jack plate on the face of the Epi you pictured would look better if it was angled slightly towards the corner of the bass to my eyes. Also depending on the color of the bass a black jack would blend in better, especially if it's a Goth with no chrome anywhere on it. I like the jack on the end of the body myself. That is where I moved the jack on my Goth project because the input had been yanked out of the front of the body. I was going to use a strat-type jack, but then decided to do a total refin on it so I patched the hole and moved the jack.

This is all just my opinion, so take it all with a grain of salt.

If you go with a Strat style, I think you are going to be limited depending on your knob configuration and the amount of available space in the routed area. There may not be enough room to do the "Sixx" style as pictured, and running it parralell to the knobs may just be "what works". I'm sure the Sixx was done to make it a bit more ergonomic for running the cord to his wireless unit. I personally would go with a Jack plate on the side of the bass like the Epi Pro or the Lulls, and then use the leftover input hole as a place for a kill switch or three way toggle.

good idea, but anyway the sixx bass was just a reference to the jack plate put either to the side of the knobs or at the bottom but yeah i guess ill have less space

My bird is a goth so yeah i was thinking of black(or stealth black). But i think i'll go with the bottom placed jack. how did you patch in the existing jack hole on the face of the body?

I used wood glue to attach a very thin piece of plywood to the cavity. Filled the top with Bondo (the car body repair filler) and sanded it smooth. I then drilled thru the part of the cavity where it is fattest (same spot as Gibson) and used the same type of jack that Gibson uses on T-Birds, so no jack plate was needed. My project is almost complete so I will have pictures of everything that I did soon.

Oh yeah Mark, I see what you mean about the green. I'm impressed by the orange G&G case too, but I would seek a different color interior.

I exchanged emails with Paul earlier today....but about a P with a jazz 'T Bass' neck. They have a Burgundy mist color on the site which I really like. It's nearly lavender in color...at least on this Imac.

This really doesn't sound good - like you got sent somebody else's return. These aren't so rare that you should keep it, that kind of dissatisfaction will likely cloud your opinion about this specific bass (with good reason!) so I'd take some pics and send it back to MF for another.

Aside from my orange one and a fiver he built for Hugh McDonald I think this it for Mike, which I can't understand.....Anymore, I roll off the bridge pup and solo the neck on a lot of my 'Birds.

sweet but i think ill go more advanced than that, just a bit thicker piece of wood to fill in the existing hole and glue it into place. how di you manage to match the finish of the body(unless you have a different colour now on the bird) so im wondering how i can make it resemble the flat black finish on the bass as to make it look like nothing was there before. thx man appreciate the help

I have painted it a different color now. You can't see the original hole at all. One thing to consider is what Stiles72 mentioned. Move the jack to the body end and install a kill switch or toggle switch in the hole. Much easier than filling and painting it and you can easily find black switches. I don't know what brand of satin paint would work, but someone in the luthiers section could point you in the right direction. I changed the controls on my Goth project to vol-vol-kill switch without a tone knob. Looks like the layout of the new Gibson Sixx model.

I recently picked up an Epi Bird for a friend of my daughters. The bass had a third pickup installed at the neck and both the neck and middle pickup ran off the first volume control. I took it to my repair guy and he changed it to 3 vol controls, kill switch in the input jack hole, and moved the jack to the body end. It works great and she loves the versatility of the 3 vol controls to change the sound and the ability to shut it off completely when she needs to. He used a mini toggle switch for the input hole but I think a larger 3-way toggle would probably work just as well.
