I don't think compression was the "fairy dust" found in most studios in Philly and NYC in the 70s ;)

I'm sure it is a good compressor though. I think they're great in studio, but live not so much. Sometimes I want that really loud spike to accent a part. I know you can adjust threshold and ratio, but I just feel I have better control over my dynamics with playing style and don't need to have a device dedicated to doing it for me. If I was using something like an 8-string or 12-string bass, then I'd probably use a compressor, just as if using one for a 12-string guitar.
I tried using a compressor recently, and it made live sound kinda dead to my ears. Digging in didn't do what it was supposed to do.

Hi All: I noticed somethin when tuning today - while my E string is good when plucked open the 12th fret of the E was slightly higher. Slightly. I could then tell a difference when hearing the note ring.

I never noticed this before. Is this common? Am I in trouble.

I've been tuning up to F for a few songs lately to make playing with a group easier. Is tuning up a whole step bad?

THX

Don't know if it's bad, but it's odd.

Sounds like your intonation needs to be adjusted. Which may have to do with you tuning up, it may be fine in regular tuning.

Are you noticing that it's sharp at the 12th fret when it's tuned in F? Tuning up will throw off your intonation.

OK, have now caught up on all the Thundertalk.
I have been very busy with the new band. Learned 36 songs in the last month or so. Practice , practice....Done first two gigs with them.
A number more booked before Xmas. Prospects look good for regular gigs with this lot!
Now I am getting more gigs and sometimes two per weekend, I am thinking I might invest in a Class D to save effort. I will probably get a GK MB Fusion, as I love my Fusion 550.
I will keep my gear I have now-- rackcase mounted GK Fusion 550 and Petersen Stroborack, as well as 2X GK Neo 212iis and a GK Neo 410.
It raises the question of a tuner. I have just about settled on a TC Polytune 2 pedal.
I have space on my pedal board.
One question- will the TC Polytune 2 mini run off a Volto- that is how I currently power my board?

THE KING OF THE MULTI-QUOTE.

@Sartori to answer your questions:

PVM 45ir is a Peavey brand is a hypercardiod dynamic mic. I'd never heard of them before, but from the sound coming out of the foldback, it was very accurate to the sound my amp was producing. I was quite happy with is as a live mic for my cab.

Yeah, that soundman was simply a dreadful individual. But now it's a running joke at band practices that we're going to DI me or invite him to be our main guy.

I want to say I've seen another as well but in red, also a 90s Custom Shop bass.

I can attest, "120w" can be punishingly loud through efficient speakers and cabs.

Agreed on the compressors. The only time I have compression is when the amps itself is compressing during the output stage. Otherwise I can use the dynamic range and control it through playing.
Oh man, what a sweet bass.

I could but it's a 4 hour round trip and I'm pretty much trapped in the house in my free time looking after my mother who has dementia, besides they aren't open evenings and weekends when I'm not working

Nice to see you back
Oh man, that's really far away.

I'm lucky in that, depending on the shipping company used, it's a 5-15 minute drive to go pick something up if it required a signature and I wasn't home.

@Sartori @D.M.N.

Not to harp on about it (but I will), the BCP-1 has a fixed 3:1 compression ratio and fixed attack and release. The only compression setting you control is the threshold and with that @ noon you get plenty of attack. The (optical) compression is subtle but it imparts a warm and phat quality reminiscent of 70s Philly and NYC studio recordings aka 'fairy dust'.
That sounds at least more user-friendly than many compressors.

I'm not sure how much it would do for my sound, though, since I'm overdriven pretty much 100% of the time, which is itself a form of compression.

Sounds like your intonation is off. Also tuning up to F is a half-step, not a whole step. Still, if you're going to be doing that regularly, you might want to use lighter gauge strings than you normally would, as tuning up places more tension on the neck.

Give @Sartori and award!
Most epic reply ever in the history of The Thunderbird Club!
Well, I was banned for a whole month, and I didn't want to miss anything, since this thread is often really interesting.

What were you banned for and @Sartori? Oooh the shame of it :roflmao:

Well I know Scott's Badbird bridge is coming today but I've ordered a chrome 3 point bridge for my Epiphone, I'm totally undecided what to put on it
I was banned for asking a newcomer in another club I was in, who piped in with a crappy opinion, and appeared about the same time we started getting way more attention from the mods, "who the **** are you?" Apparently I was reported for this.

this sounds like I'll HAVE to chime in for 320 Pounds shipped to Germany... shiat.... custom Colors cost more or does he simply order them like that?

does the "original" sunburst dirtybird have a p-style neck? If so, I might just pull the Trigger on a sunburst Version and do a rattle can refin......

I had another conversation with him last night.
If you go to Jow Bass on Facebook, there is a new, short video of a buyer playing one.
It has a 10% discount offer.
THIS IS ONLY ON CURRENT STOCK. After the interest on Basschat he has decided to go the custom order option and as such has put a discount on the stock he has.
