One of the things which has always scared me off doing something similar is not knowing what to do with truss rods (oh, and never having powertools beyond a couple of electric drills).
Routers aren't difficult tools to use, making the work piece secure (with a handheld one), taking light cuts and cutting in the right direction is the most important bit, stick getting those basics right and you won't go far wrong. They are a skill soon learnt, still if you are interested a couple of books, one a basic book for dummies and another giving ideas for using jigs with a router. I guess in this day and age there are probably lots of videos on youtube too.
