Thunderbird Club

The fenderbird is drawing to conclusion, had the body in the living room all week where it's very warm to harden the nitro, it seems spot on so me being the worlds most impatient sod I went for it, sanded 600 - 800 - 1200 - 2500 then T-cut and finished of with some G10 for the shine. drilled a few holes, screwed a few screws and low and behold it looks something like!

Downside is I'm still waiting for the chrome pickup covers from Crazyparts in Germany, been on order for 3 weeks now, not impressed, I shall be ordering from the states again in future. So still awaiting a fret job and strings::

If only you'd put a rosewood J neck on it....

No, really nice work.

One of the things which has always scared me off doing something similar is not knowing what to do with truss rods (oh, and never having powertools beyond a couple of electric drills).

The ugly:
Rehabilitation in progress, putting it back to stock. Friend of mine wants a bird really bad. Fixing it and giving it to him View attachment 992025

The bad:
I'm officially birdless, not even parts left

The good:
Might take me awhile...
Going to build a bird from scratch. Going to move the neck bridge and pickup towards the tail pin so my short azz arms can reach the tuners. Thinking of using a maple Precision neck with a vintage C 1 11/16" width. (I like em thick!)

Thoughts, comments, snarky derogatory insults?
It's very cool that you are doing your buddy a solid and gifting him the bass (esp. since you are "T-birdless" at the moment).

@ColinLP, your P-bird is looking really nice! Personally, I like the maple P-bass neck. Although, I must say that one of the things that was most salient to me, when I first played my bird, was how comfortable the neck felt. I have bigger meathooks but about the only bass/guitar neck that has ever felt "small" is my Rick 620 6-string.

It's a bit of a paddle isn't it, I can't understand how so many people prefer its log like proportions, they must have much much bigger hands than mine and mine aren't small

I like the precision neck - but only when it's on a thick body (i picked up a 7ender pbass & i didnt like the fact it had a slim body & wide neck). Thin width on a thin body (which i've got two of - pbasses) & one with a true pbass neck (thicker body & copy).

I haven't figured how you folks play those toothpick necks!

I've got a few basses that have slim neck widths. I can bounce between, big enough hands to do so.

I've just received the Deep Sixx pickups! Brand new in the box never been played, in November i'll be revamping my thunderbird for good giving it the tweaks it needs & a fresh new look aesthetic wise. It'll look great along with the tigerbird.

Will be giving my verdict in tone sometime in January the time to complete all the mods i need to do on the bird!
Just peeking in here to say I'll be interested to hear how you like the Deep Sizes.

What is the usual "whiskey/whisky" for a Whiskey Sour? Or is any used depending on region? Scotch/Irish/Rye/Bourbon ?

I don't know if there a usual, but at the end of our show on Halloween I had the bartender make me one and requested Maker's Mark - He thought that was a good idea and added some Triple Sec, not sure what he used for Bitters - Nice post-show :)

Hi everyone
I've joined this forum a few days ago to post a thread about amp recommendations for my new Greco TBird. Now here's what the actual fuss is all about ^^

It plays and sounds really great. There's lots of road wear but I am fine with that - it only proves that someone actually used it because it has great sound!

I've set it up with D'addario 45-105 in standard E. The only problem is I can't get the truss rod to turn in any way - it seems blocked or broken. I will look into this issue when I put new strings on next time.

One question though - do all Thunderbirds need to have (relatively) high string action in order to avoid the nasty buzzing of the frets? It's not really an issue because I am used to having strings quite high on all my other guitars, just curious.

Didn't want to lose your post in all this, it's a lovely Greco, we don't see nearly enough of them here - would you like to join our little club?
Most of the initiation involves pagan dancing around fires made of 7ender basses - we enjoy riling up the fanbois and their white hats every now and then.

Reminds me of this...

I have nothing derogatory to say about your build. It has to be the way you want to play it, not what many of us prefer. My hands don't get on well with big necks and I'm not a fan of maple fretboards (no clue why) but I will gladly watch your build progress and cheer you on as I'm sure the rest of the group will as well.

Take what I say for what it's worth - I'm probably CroMagnon and play rockabilly slap on an upright, so string height issues don't bother me very much. That said, I haven't noticed any problems with any of the 'Birds I own. They all have low action and no buzz. One in particular is set up with stupid low action- it's my speed bass. It sounds to me like you have a trussrod issue and your bass could use a setup.
