I haven’t installed EBCF on my Dano but knowing that I have snapped a EBCF flat once before on another bass, I’d probably be inclined to hand wind the tuner post end vs using the tuning key to wind up. That way you’ll have at least a couple of wraps around the post to help absorb the tension vs pulling hard against the sharp edge of the tuning post hole as you bring the bass up to pitch. Also be sure to get the short scale set so you have silks in the tuning post hole vs the metal windings, that might soften the edge a bit as well.
If you’re really concerned about the string breaking at the tuning post you could always take a small round file to the post hole to knock the edge off the hole so it doesn’t dig into the string.

How do the SIT flats compare to the princess finger EB flats?

Went today and asked in my local music store as to when will a new shipment of Epiphone Thunderbird IV's would arrive and was told that it didn't looked like they would arrive anytime soon, that If I wanted Fenders they had a shipment coming, and they had a few of both mexicans and americans on stock and that Squier shipment looked just as bleak as Epiphone's. It looks like I'll have to save up even more and order online, probably from Thomann...

I put a set of La Bella Black tapewounds on my Jazz 5 back in 2005. Still on it and still going strong. It was my main bass from 2005 to about 2015 so it probably got about 15 hours of play time a week during that period. Then I stumbled upon Tbirds and from 2015 to present maybe only a couple hours a week of use. All fingers, no pic, no slap.


I installed GHS Black tapewounds on my Squire Jazz 5 in 2010. Not fond of them at all, very stiff, not nearly as full range sounding as La Bella’s (not even close), very old school thud and thump from day one. The strings were still on it when I gave the bass away a few weeks ago to a friend and really haven’t changed at all in sound or condition. He likes the feel of them (smooth, firm) but has the same observations about the sound, very two dimensional, no real detail in the sound. I think he plans to drop some EBCF on the bass.


I have snapped a EBCF “D” string when installing and tuning up a brand new set. Assumed it was me, but seems like I’m hearing more of that happening, so might be because they are in fact brittle. But I gotta admit, I’ll take those any day over Chrome flats, those chromes are darn bright for a flat. Not my cuppatea.

How old was it? I've had DTB on basses for years with no problems with breakage. That's VERY unusual. When strings break it's usually a sharp edge on the bass somewhere. The last time I broke a string was in 1976-77, broke two A strings (Rotos) at the bridge on a Fender within two weeks of each other, it was a burr on the saddle.

I had a Cobalt flat G break after about a year. The saddle on my VP bridge is smooth, but I was popping the string.
