Cliff is a superb bassist and their whole rhythm section (Cliff, Phil and Malcom) is one of the best.
Mark Evans was no slouch either (he played up and including "Let There Be Rock").

One thing I love about AC/DC is that they seldom play the same thing. If bass is chugging the 8th's there's hardly ever a rhythm guitar doing the same with palm muting. Very economical and makes the band sound bigger.

Cliff is very good, he can really get around on the neck when he wants to, he gives AC/DC what they need, nothing less and nothing more, I would have a hard time playing that simple all the time, check out his stuff before he joined AC/DC. I also love Phil's drumming.

Interestingly, in Mark Evans’ book about the early days he mentioned that George Young would grab a bass and jump on in while they were working songs up in the studio. George also played live with them when they were between bassists (often!) before they settled on Mark and then Cliff.
Mark rated George as an excellent and melodic bass player, in the McCartney mould. I don’t hear that, but maybe some of George’s imprint stuck around on the earlier albums?

Cliff was a more established bassist before joining than Mark was, and I guess more influenced my Malcolm’s requests. Sheer guesswork here though.

I did read an interview with one of the drummers between Phil Rudd stints say that Malcolm was insistent on how he played. This song you play this. Only this. Right through the repertoire for whatever show was coming up. I guess the alternative was ‘or be fired’.

Malcolm was spoiled by Phil, hard to improve upon what he did. You'd have to play them like he did, that is signature stuff.

and even when you think he’s pedaling 8ths he may not be….the verse here’s a half note followed by legato quarter notes…..always loved their cleverness masters at that style imho…

I love their Bon Scott stuff, he was a great lyricist too. That was a sad day in my life when he died, they were just taking off in the U.S. my local FM station used to play them a lot though before Highway to Hell.
