I won't speak for others. My feelings on NY are complicated. I like his songs...

Particularly amusing to me as I was in a semi-heavy rock group in the md 80s called "Stallion". The drummer/BL wanted to get a horse trailer with the logo on the sides to schlep our gear(we had quite a bit*). Group ran its course before he bought one.

*big@$$ guitar amps(2), SVT/810(mine-bass in one channel, keyboards in the other), drums, PA gear. Lotta [stuff].

I'm sure others will chime in.
I'm no expert here.

In this order are my favs.

Lulls, absolutely top of the heap, for me.
V might disagree with me, idk.
I thought the Lulls had everything you could imagine from grind to smooth.
Very articulate and powerful sounding, a real kick in the pants.
To me, made the originals sound weak. I don't mean that in a bad way.
Just that i've never heard any TBird pick up sound like that before.

SideWinders, very close second.

ThunderBuckers, To me they are a smoother sounding pick up, a lot like The Lollars, but with a bit more clarity.

Originals, they are in a league of their own.
Only way i could describe it is.....
For the same reason people love the early 60's Pbasses.

And it's no wonder a 60's Tbird sounds like a 60's Pbass and then some.

Of course YMMV based off strings, amp, playing technique.

If everything else were equal ( strings, amp, settings etc.) Lulls, Lollars and Thunderbuckers should all sound very similar, they all claim to be accurate repros.

'76 pickups are unto themselves, love them (I do!) or hate them, as some do. They don't sound like the '60s version to my ear, lots of bass and sub, plus clank.

With it's pickup flush with the edge of it ring my '64 is a little subdued, but I really like it's tone, especially with the amp up just a little, it's warm, growly and full - Love it.
The Greco II is right there, to my ear short of buying the real deal it's very close at a fraction of the price, my lull T4 is pretty spot on as well.
