He presented top-level bands of different genre's of modern music (Grateful Dead w/Miles Davis!) and educated listeners to a broad spectrum of contemporary music. He had it right - music is the key, and diversity leads to the broader comprehension/understanding. I leaned from his informed tact - music should not be a competition - it is a shared experience.

The "lessor" opening act BS is so old... I much prefer an evening where both bands are engaging.

Alex Cooley used to do that. Of course, in the deep south, it didn't always work. I forget who the opener was, but it was a mostly (all?) black world music band, and the worst of the Who fans booed them off the stage multiple times before they gave up. It was infuriating. Cooley (and, IIRC, Daltry) would get the crowd calmed down, and just a few minutes into the next song, ugly pandemonium.

So absurd. If the opening band is kicking your aardvark, up your game! In 1973, Skynyrd played their butts off, going all out. The Who just went all out as well. Completely different bands, and both won a lot of hearts that night.

It didn't seem to happen with house sound people in clubs for some reason and yes I agree with that 100%, it should spur you on to play better.

I think it varies - my Grass Roots/ESP Bass IV (used) was priced reasonably and shipping was fast & free. And it's become my go-to bass for TSC's! I'd buy from Japan again if I found something I couldn't live without. ;)

I saw/heard a fave Manchester band called Elbo at Bimbo's in SF. (cool venue) The young 'warm-up' band was touring with them, also from the UK. Can't recall their name... Weather something. (and not Weather Report!) Everything about their set was off - sound levels weren't even, and then the fog machine went out-of-control engulfing the guitar player! What a mess! When Elbo came on - everything was spot-on. It kind of annoyed me that they subjected their opening act to that... and they probably did something like that every show on the tour!

I bought my Greco Bird from Japan and it was a great experience and the price for the bass and shipping were more than fair. I would buy from Japan again if there was something I really wanted or needed.

I sometimes check eBay for 4001's and their prices are almost always way up there compared to N America and the majority of them are in Japan, not sure about other basses.

I'm not bashing Japan incidentally, have just noticed their prices, at least for 4001's are high compared to the U.S.

A lot of times, I think they're setting up the sound while the opening bands are playing too but that sounds a little excessive. :laugh:

My gas for another Ric is extremely high these past weeks.
After i move into my new place, and the dust settles.
I may just trade something along with some dough for the right one.
But won't happen any time soon.

Back in the day, I heard Renaissance occasionally but not that often. The whole band's good, but Annie (vocals) and Jon (bass) really stand out. Jon Camp used to hang on here occasionally, it seems, but got tired of dealing with GP absurdity. A shame, because those seemed to be the minority. Oh, well. He sounded incredible, despite being chained to a Ric.

Start about four minutes in unless you speak French. The volume is abysmal. But still.
