Thunderbird Club

I just had a weird thing happen, I bought a Tung Sol 12AX7 for my SVT and had it shipped out here and the tube is physically larger than any one I've ever seen and won't fit in the tube shield. :banghead:

I just googled it and it seems to have been a long term problem, found a Gear Page thread from 2008 about this same thing.

Should be fine without the tube shield. I recall some big honking preamp tubes from a decade or so ago. Probably the Tung Sols.

I just loaned my VP (wild how that migrated from leader of the flock to spare bird) to a cool young man who just moved here (married someone we know). He got an opportunity to play bass for someone at SXSW. His band in Savannah had gigged regularly in several states and opened for Bon Jovi. So my VP is having a brush with fame!
He favored Gary Rossington a bit, physically. That caught me off guard.

Played this bass at rehearsal last night, I hadn't even touched since taking it to the California GTG - Through the Trace Elliott and SWR it Rawred very nicely, why did I stop playing it for 8 months, sheesh.

That's odd indeed. The ones I got for a guitar amp went right in . Different pin pattern ?

Problem is the tube shield is attached to the chassis, the top part slides in and out. I did google it and it's been a known problem with some Tung Sols since at least 2008, so live and learn.

And they were the same size as the JJ's I replaced.

I don't think it's all of them, I found a thread from 2008 where people were complaining about them. I have all JJ 12DW7's in the same amp and they fit fine, I've never had a problem fitting a preamp tube in an SVT, weird. This is Russian 12AX7's not vintage tubes.

Someone's pics keep setting my monitor on fire.

I got your back Honda:thumbsup: - I suspect what you meant to say is he’s Putin the oversize tubes in the SVT anyway. ;)
That was awful enough to have been said by GP, our official Florida wag.

For what it is worth, I finally got a bass x-tender for the Flamingo. It's the one bass I play most and it hasn't had one of those. I like them. Now it will have one. I'll be happy.
