I finally received that Epiphone Thunderbird 60s Bass with the loose tailpiece at a nice price.
I glued and doweled the oversized holes and bought longer SS screws. It tightened right up and is holding tune.
The bass is like new…I had to peel film off plastic covers and pickguard. I am taking it to a local shop for final setup but it actually plays pretty good right now. It does have some fret buzz to fix and I’ll get new strings. Any strings recommended?
Initial impressions: Black bass with white pickguard and chrome PU’s look tuxedo classy.
Neck is nice and thin. PU’s sound full and nice tones.
Hope to have it back next week to jam with some old band mates!

I was wondering about this. Most clubs (including this one in the past) that get a lot of posts reset every so often with a new thread. Was that due to limits/issues with the platform, just what people did, or what? I followed several club thread chains looking for their origins, and in at least one case it dead ended at a link no longer valid (not this club).

The G&L club thread was divided at some point. Unlike here*, I don't visit but once in a while there and am not sure why it was chopped up.

*No thread is like this one. Very special people here. (No scare quotes around special either!)

My commute is ten steps from my front door to my truck. Then typically anywhere from 50 to 200 miles driving during the day, depending on where my job (or jobs) are that day. I have clients/systems I manage as far south as Pebble Beach/Monterey, and as far north/east as Truckee/Lake Tahoe. I do a good job missing a lot of the commute traffic, since I usually do get out the door until after 9, but if I am on my way back home at 5 to 6 pm, I can get hung up in it since I live very near one of the bridges that cross the SF Bay. And Thursdays are the worst. I think a substantial amount of people that live way out in the valley and beyond maybe stay in the Bay Area Monday through Wednesday night and go home after work on Thursdays. I’d guess Monday mornings coming in from the valley are terrible too.

I think you've got something there, Jeff! But I like the sidewinders in my '76, so I'm partial. Being in the middle position would give it some extra bark. Well done!

At one point we did have to start a new thread after 1000 posts, as my first post in this thread notes, we had 7 previous club threads that reached 1000. This was to be the 8th and soon after there was an upgrade to the site and the post limit was no longer needed. In a little over a month on 2/18/2024 the thread will be 10 years old.

It's definitely in the sweet spot Donnie.
I'd be perfectly happy if the Sidewinder was the only pick up in this bass.

Ok great, I do tend to go for a bit of a brighter tone, so the epi doesn't sound like too bad of an idea. Thank you for the advice . Significantly cheaper than the gibby over here down under too, with the insane reverb shipping prices for the big G.

As Miles said (and maybe others by now), the Epi will be brighter and more aggressive by nature. Also very close to the sound of the originals--given you aren't paying thousands (US dollars) for it. I like them so much I have two, and next to my '64 (gold standard), they are right up in the "If I could only have one bass and it wasn't my '64" area. They are well made and sound great. But much of this depends on what you are playing through and what it adds and takes away. They can be shy on the lows. But amps have a special knob that can help that!

Ok cool, thanks for the reply, I've got a mate with a Gibson which I'll ask to try out, I tend to go for a more scooped mids sound running through my little ampless pedalboard with an always on xotic bb bass preamp, so I'll try both with my normal sound and see which I prefer. Thanks for all the tips everyone they've been very helpful

In that case, you may prefer the Gibson. The pickups are farther apart and therefore lean in that direction more so than the Epis. One thing about the Gibsons is that they play and feel wonderful. There were some complaints years ago about QC, but mine is perfect and as enjoyably to play as anything I have.
