Thunderbird Club

At one point we did have to start a new thread after 1000 posts, as my first post in this thread notes, we had 7 previous club threads that reached 1000. This was to be the 8th and soon after there was an upgrade to the site and the post limit was no longer needed. In a little over a month on 2/18/2024 the thread will be 10 years old.

Thanks for making it such a cool place all!

10 years? I assumed it was around longer. I joined in '10 so didn't know about it for at least 4 yrs? Crazy. I didn't realize there was a BTC. (Before Thunderbird Club) :)

Even the crappy iPhone mic picked it up.

Well, I'd have to concede that it isn't crappy as it really did sound good. I'm always getting people wanting to hear my custom basses I have for sale and have tried doing something more complicated unsuccessfully - but if an iPhone can deliver that, that's all you need. How close to the speaker was the iPhone?

I was wondering about this. Most clubs (including this one in the past) that get a lot of posts reset every so often with a new thread. Was that due to limits/issues with the platform, just what people did, or what? I followed several club thread chains looking for their origins, and in at least one case it dead ended at a link no longer valid (not this club).
The crazy thing is that this one was like that for a long time, too. So there's more than just this thread. I don't remember what iteration this thread is. Veronica knows, though. And already laid it all out. I sure can't keep up.

I finally got the Epiphone TV Silver Thunderbird. I won't bore you with the aggravation I went through with UPS, but it here now!

It needed a bit of work when I got it. But nothing too serious.
  • Frets were green and needed to be cleaned/polished.
  • Output jack was broken such that it could not be tightened. Had to replace it.
  • Nut was a mess and needed to be filed. The E string was way too high which was keeping it from being setup well.
  • Fretboard was super dry. Oiled it up and it looks great.
  • Needed a good setup.
  • Needed a small neck shim to setup correctly. Used a small piece of business card.
  • Changed to flatwound strings. Had the usual silk over the saddle problem so I had to remove the silk on the ball end of the strings with an exacto knife and tweezers.
  • Strap button on the butt end was loose and the hole was out of round. Needed toothpicks and glue. This may require more attention later.

Its the TV Silver version, but its aged to green. Not even a little bit silver - totally green. This is a plus for me, I love green basses!

It balances OK on a strap with a 3 inch canvas strap.

The tuners are loose and don't work very well. I'm going to need to replace them. I'll probably use Hipshot ultralights. Does anyone know what size the tuner hole is? I wish I'd thought to measure it when I had the strings off.

I could not get the truss rod to turn in either direction. But I didn't try to force it too hard because the relief was set right and it didn't need to be adjusted. I could probably soak it with solvent and work at it to get it to turn, but I'm not going to mess with it right now since it doesn't need to be adjusted.

It sounds great. Its got a big full sound. But it can also growl. The neck pickup fully on, and the bridge pickup at about half seems to be my favorite spot. But I'll have to play with it to figure it out.

I'm going to need to play around with the strap to figure out how to wear it. I tend to play with my thumb on the front pickup. So it seems to be most comfortable slung lower than I usually wear a bass, with the neck up. This also helps with reaching the lower frets since my arms are not that long.

Here are the pics!

Congrats! I love my TV Silver. Tuners on mine are ok.
