Thunderbird Club

make no mistake, 350HP, 430ft/lbs and a curb weight of 3000lbs is why I’m drawn….nothing like like (the privilege of) driving a late 60’s OHV V-8 manual American 2 seater….:hyper::hyper:…Italian styling is just icing on the cake…
My Camaro will weigh more when it is finished, but it should have a bit more power to make up for it. Low mass is its own reward, though. My brother had a '68 AMX with a 343 and 4-speed. It was an absolute rocket, and it handled a whole lot better than anything else like it. He sold it and bought a VW Jetta. I never could figure that out.

I traded my paper route money 65 Fairlane for a 72 Javelin, and gave the Javelin away when I joined the military...

Downtown Seattle is about 12 miles from my domicile, I work Sat-Wed, the drive in on the weekends is easy and I have gated free parking, which is kinda plush. But, the 12 mile each way commute is intolerable during the work week so I rarely drive in on those days, my ride of choice:
'98 EMD F59PHI, 3,200hp 12 cylinders, track is rated for 73mph most of the way, which takes about 22 minutes, no stress, and I don't turn into a "type A" jerk dealing with idiots in cars.

Props for giving the F59's specs.

you and me both…..love the “elastic” headroom and big bottom end of those pups especially in the neck position …..it’s brother in a live setting….can’t beat live settings to see how stuff’ll pan imho….that said, pls ignore the singer’s range ;)….

 But where's yer flip-flops?

I tend to like a slightly scooped sound with a lot of low mids. Too much bottom end turns everything to mud. I don't like a nasal, whiney, murky green scoop sound like some people get from a Jazz. Given the choice of that or a wooly, brown mid heavy sound like a Precision, I'll go with the Precision sound. Thunderbirds improve on that sound by turning the brown black and adding other colors like teal and electric blue around the edges. That either makes sense or it doesn't. Strings change the color, meaning that if you want a VP to sound more like a Gibson, you can go that direction with strings, and if you want a brighter, thinner sound out of a Gibson, you can go toward that sound with string choice.
Yeah I was thinking that about strings, I tend to play Ernie ball cobalt flats but I can go for a good set of rounds…

On the eq thing because I run ampless I use a little boss eq200 with a scoop in the mids, the teensiest bit of bass added and a moderate amount of treble added, but because my stingray is active I tend to do most of the work on that three band. So there will be some adjustments to do there to sound how I want, I can mess around with all that stuff when I try out the Gibson and the VP again. I definitely do agree with the points there on too much bass making things murky. Also what you said about the tbird adding colours to the mix really made lots of sense. Those funky frequencies are exactly why I like the tone of the birds so much!

My area Craig’s list keeps on giving.
Too bad I am out of room.

That's a "just get it out of my house" price! I helped a friend retrieve a Hammond M3 (home) organ that he got off of Craigslist for free. We had to carry it down a long flight of stairs. It needed a little work but once fixed it sounded awesome! A baby B3.

I am a big fan of EBCFs. Also Kevin Smith Rockmaster strings when I go to rounds. One of these years, I plan to set up the '91 and '01 with Rockmasters and get the pickups and action as close to the same as possible. The '91 has Thunderbucker pickups and the '01 is stock. The goal is to eliminate variables as much as possible to see if there's much difference in the sound.

Some of the so called “QC” issues were complaints about the nitro finishes not being 100% perfectly smooth looking like one gets on a poly finish. A little rougher at the seems so to speak. But that’s the nature of nitro. I have five Gibson Thunderbirds. No QC complaints from me.
Maybe I’m remembering the past with “Rose coloured glasses” but Gibson’s finishes in the 60’s and 70’s were better than today’s Epiphone finishes.
