Thunderbird Club

Crackling is usually a dirty pot. Sometimes you can clean 'em by rotating it lock to lock a few thousand times, hosing it out with some electronics cleaner, or it may need to be replaced. If you don't know your way around the inside of an amp, have a pro give you an estimate. There are things inside that box that hold large amounts of electricity for a very long time. It's not worth risking it.

Was I the only kid that charged up capacitors with a few hundred volts then:
  1. Leave them on the work bench, or
  2. Put them away.
Then wait for someone to pick them up without being careful?

I installed the GZR P pu's in a DeArmond bass and they sound very nice. Compared to the orig set, they are more musical, nuanced in general. There's a whole thread on them and most everyone likes them.

That's a singular looking instrument - a bit like there was a transporter accident between a Fender Jaguar and an Ovation Magnum. 'Two basses to beam down'.

Oh no doubt, getting some coffee now, good way to start the morning though Count, love it.

What cab is that?
It's a Sunn 215s, with a pair of Sunn SPL- branded 15" drivers. They were made to JBL specs of the day for their 15. Very deep sounding, almost billowy, with some nice midrange grind in them.

The cab is set to be replaced with a home rebuild when I can dig up some time...

Cool, thanks, looked like a Sunn but wasn't sure. Must sound good with that Trace.

Oh yeah. That's sexy. Very nice. Gonna stop looking at it now.

I don't think he'll mind: This is my old mentor, Ray Harris, in a YouTube clip playing a set at the Miami Punk Rock High 80s reunion show last weekend. He was one of those people who, upon seeing him with his band Z-Cars, caused me to take a seat and mutter, "Ohhh... THAT'S how you play the bass." Someone put a beer in my hand and there I sat, watching and wrapping my head around this guy's free, radical, musical and very performance-oriented approach.

Here's a revamped Z-Cars, minus two long-gone members, doing a couple tunes at Churchill's Hideaway. Ray's playing a Thunderbird, of course, which sound you'll recognize...

Good evening all. Can anyone point me to a replacement nut for my Epi Classic Pro? Four string. Just something about the plastic I'm not digging.
I have been told that you can call Graphtech and tell them what ya got and what it's strung with, and they'll send you a perfect fit drop in for a very reasonable price. Otherwise it'll have to be cut, and due to time that can get expendy.

eBay has brass ones available. I just put in Thunderbird replacement nut

It's interesting about a nut - it really depends on the specific bass if a brass nut (which I am a fan of using) sounds best or not. Most of the time it is a positive mod but I did it once on a P/J Jag bass and it sounded better w/the plastic nut. Bone is nice too and I've cut a few composite nuts (ebony/brass, tusk/brass, rockwood/brass) which I very much like -

I recently cut this brass one for my '64 T-bird after realizing the orig from the Gibson factory in 1964 was so poorly spaced. Played it for many years oblivious to this. sad :D Needless to say, with a properly spaced brass nut - the bird is now one bad raptor! :bassist:
