The issue is astronomers say the moon is 1/400th the size of the sun and 400 times closer. So, the moon is the exact same size as the sun optically from the earth. If that was true, then the transit would be continuous. So, there must be other geometric issues at play.
Earth's orbit is not a perfect circle. It is an elliptical orbit slightly oval-shaped and so is the Moon’s. Everything is constantly changing. That makes it hard to line Sun-Moon-Earth together.

The Moon is much closer to the Earth and it's orbit is tilted. It is moving at a much faster and different rotational path then the Earth is rotating around the Sun. Every so often their orbits line up and create a Lunar Eclipse or a Solar Eclipse. That's why a Total Solar Eclipse is a fairly rare event! Next one here is over 400 years away!
Dang! I'll miss that one too.

Rotation of the earth.
Space-time continuum.
A multi-verse warping perception due to rare proximity.
Dark matter.
Curvature of light.
String theory.
Quantum Mechanics.
Neck Dive.

I'm still guessing rotation of the erf has some impact. Assuming it's rotating in the needed direction.

New possibility...
News flash: Apparently the "planet" moon is "made up mostly of gasses." Must be some new discovery NASA is uncovering.
