Thunderbird Club

We had bad experiences buying used so we buy new and drive them until they break too often or maintenance is more than a car payment would be.
That's an excellent plan. What I would do if I ever bought new. Assuming I'm never going to have more money than I know what to do with. That might change things a bit. After buying all the Thunderbirds that Scott and Geddy don't own.

Like the time I pushed the old PV544 to 100 going downhill coming back from a gig in Santa Maria. The girl riding with me thought it was fun. Until it wasn’t.
A former (literally went insane and disappeared) best friend was taking his date back from HS prom, tripping his brains out, and manually shifting his dads' automatic Opel when he screwed up at 60MPH and shifted into reverse. He said it tore the engine off its mounts and it went through the radiator. He walked his date home, then walked home and went to bed.

Hey now, mine are not (currently) for sale!

NZ trip was great. A beautiful spot - Picton on the beautiful Queen Charlotte Sound and then Blenheim and the beautiful Marlborough wine region. If you’ve heard of Cloudy Bay and/or Sauvignon Blanc - that’s from the Marlborough.

Only saw 2 interesting cars, a Studebaker coupe, badge said something like Commander maybe? and a Volvo P1800.

Yep, that’s it.

Oh there was one more. A circa 2009 Cadillac CTS. Interesting story, GM was planning to reintroduce Cadillac to Australia way back then. They set up GM Premium (not sure of the right name now) dealerships for Caddy, Saab and Opel (GM had stripped the Opel cars from Holden and gave them Daewoo’s instead!). Then it all went arse over head when the GFC hit. There was the first small batch of CTS’s landed but they had yet to be launched. GM cancelled it all and went bankrupt, the Caddy’s were sent over to NZ and sold there. I bet it was one of those.

Now Australia is due for another Cadillac relaunch, an all electric range of SUVs starting with the Lyriq (?). Social media ads started some months ago.

The last official Cadillac’s here were in the 1930s/40s I think. Then false starts around 1998/2000 and the 2008/9 effort.

Yikes!
Back around 1985 I had a Plymouth Reliant K car (hardtop fortunately). What a POS that car was. It came with the marriage to my second wife and I sold it as fast as I could. Bought her a 1986 Alfa Romeo spider, very fun and cute car.
My car at that time was a Volkswagon Rabbit GTI, also loads of fun and surprising room inside, foolishly traded it in for a Chrysler Laser Turbo XE (another POS) and quickly sold that for a 1986 Jeep Cherokee Laredo, loved the utility of that one.

We were car shopping in ‘85. These were really cheap at the dealer in Sacto. Fortunately, I was a Car and Driver subscriber. This review convinced me to give it a hard pass. It was a total POS even new.

A company I worked for bought several K cars to use for delivery vehicles. They broke down regularly enough that the boss cut his losses and dumped them.
