Im trying to type this while I'm a little choked up so bear with me.

My wife had been out of work for a couple of years and we have been struggling a little to get caught up. I haven’t made any bass related purchases in a long time but have been lusting after a Thunderbird.

Today I stopped my my local GC to fantasize and drool over some gear. I found a brand new black Epi 60's on clearance. I texted these pics to my oldest daughter, she's 21, and I joking told her I better leave before I do something stupid. I put the bass back on the rack and brousesd around for a few minutes and as I'm leaving the manager stops me and asks my name. He said don't leave. I have something for you. He came back with the bass and he said it's from McKenzie and Kylie. We both got choked up and I didn't even know what to say.

I'm so happy and so proud of my kids and I absolutely love this bass


Now, may I have a number?

cool shot….I had one because everyone had one back in the 70’s and 80’s never really my cup of tea….

I bought an '86 4003 in Fireglo, the ('80-'86)' one with the tr access at the heal, two part pg and 2 wood-screws in the bridge (to hold it down...) for $400 w/HSC. Someone removed the pu's and electronics harness and it needed a fret-job. I found/bought an '85 harness, bought pu's from RIC and made a pearl 2-piece pg for it. (top section of the original white one was missing) Held onto it for a couple years and liked it ok - it was a pretty bass and sounded good, but like you never 'loved' it so I sold it for $1300. I could have sold it for more but I didn't want to first pay to have it re-fretted.

Not everyone's cup of tea, but I really miss my old '73 4001 - I truly regret selling that bass.

Good afternoon Thunderbird loving sisters and brothers. Taking a mental health break here at work and thought I would reach out for a bit of advice. I have found myself thinking about a black Rickenbacker I played a year or two ago at a shop in west Seattle. I was quite taken with it as it played and sounded wonderful. I have heard no end of stories of QC problems, unresponsive management, and difficult warranty issues, so am more than my usual cautious. The prospects of buying one, or even playing another locally are non existent, and a trip west of the mountains is not possible until late July! I have heard good things about Wildwood Guitars, and they have some Fireglo and Mapleglo models that look quite nice. I have looked at some Jetglo basses on the Sweetwater site. I am wondering if anyone here has any advice in this regard. Experiences, good or bad, with Ricks, and either of those vendors, or other venders would be greatly appreciated. I had a white ‘79 Rickenbacker 4001 in the mid-90s and it was a great bass; but a little too twangy for me, so I traded it and $75 for my cherished 1951 Kay M-1B Double Bass, and I never looked back. I tried recording with the Ricky once and it had so much high end that the sound engineer said we needed to “get the Geddy out of your tone”; which made me laugh. So naturally I strapped on my ‘93 Bird and laid down the tracks with the gorgeous humbucking tone that only a Thunderbird can provide—running through my early 70s Fender Bassman head (I wish I would have never sold that amp). I don’t regret selling the Rickenbacker, but if I was ever going to get another one, it would be a newer one and I would do the Cliff Burton humbucker swap for the neck pickup. Cliff was able to get such an amazing tone out of his Rick back in the day that it almost makes me want to get another one. Almost!

I always wanted a Ric. I auditioned several five or six years ago. Couldn’t find one that felt right. Nothing will happen soon. But with the changes they’ve made, I’ll probably try again at some point down the line.

Im trying to type this while I'm a little choked up so bear with me.

My wife had been out of work for a couple of years and we have been struggling a little to get caught up. I haven’t made any bass related purchases in a long time but have been lusting after a Thunderbird.

Today I stopped my my local GC to fantasize and drool over some gear. I found a brand new black Epi 60's on clearance. I texted these pics to my oldest daughter, she's 21, and I joking told her I better leave before I do something stupid. I put the bass back on the rack and brousesd around for a few minutes and as I'm leaving the manager stops me and asks my name. He said don't leave. I have something for you. He came back with the bass and he said it's from McKenzie and Kylie. We both got choked up and I didn't even know what to say.

I'm so happy and so proud of my kids and I absolutely love this bass


Now, may I have a number?

You have a great Thunderbird at a killer price. They are worth far more. As close as you can get to the original without dropping a grand (Greco), or much more. Epi hit it out of the park with those. If for some reason it doesn't sound exactly like you want, try strings. It will be happy with all kinds of strings from SS to flats. There is a string that will make you happy. If I could only have one of my basses and it not be my '64 Thunderbird, I would want one of my VPs.

I need to give a shoutout to this guy. If you have a J or P type bass and find it uncomfortable to anchor your thumb, he's got you covered. I found he did this stuff and thought maybe he could make something for the uncomfortable J-type pickup in my Carvin, since I always anchor my thumb on the bridge pickup. Turned out he already had, but just hadn't put it up on his site yet. I ordered one for me and one for Jeff, but although it's a cool design to cup your thumb, I realized I always anchor my thumb off the corner of the pickup, which is why I love the TB+ for that. I asked if he could make something (of course offering to pay him for his extra time), and now there's also a "Thunderbird Style" thumb rest for J pickups. Too cool. And fortunately both the original ones Jeff could use. I'm weird.
