Thunderbird Club

Haven't posted here in a VERY long while. But, in that time I've been sorta busy...and sorta busy collecting a very particular breed of Thunderbird. Specifically, the 1979 ebony finish 'Birds. Which, according to Larry Meiner's book "Gibson Shipment Totals: 1937-1979", Gibson shipped only 7 of them on its final year. It took me a number of years, but I've managed to source four of them.
And yeah, it was exhausting!

What's engraved on that one's bridge cover?

Aw, thanks, man! The worst part is, they're spending way more time in their cases than on stage anywhere right now.

I can always baby sit one for you.
But i hear ya, to have such nice instruments and not see enough play time.
But at least they are with someone who cares about them.

I have a ltd. Epi with TB+. Through headphones they do not sound great. However, through my rig they sound fine. They are deep-sounding. I think eventually I will replace them.

Epiphone TV Silver Thunderbird IV Bass
From the little I've been able to find on them I was thinking the TV Silver was the same pickups and hardware as the white. Care to throw out an opinion on how they compare to the TB+ pickups? I'm assuming the same pickups on yours as on the one in the link you provided.

Edit: it says those ARE TB+, so I'm left to assume they're the same as the black, shiny covers being the only difference. Sure would like some confirmation though. Anyone?

Like those rich 1%er's hoarding cash and taking it out of circulation, thus killing the economy :rollno:

Let one of those "trickle down" my way
But note, I would have to take those covers off, need to mute.

Yeah, the covers are only on for the picture. I'd never be able to play one with 'em on, both, because I play with a pick and tend to use quite long straps. That all said, I'll let you know if one wants to trickle down somewhere!

Good eye!
So, I got that one last year at Chicago Music Exchange. On the bridge cover is...well, here's a pic. (Apparently SOMEONE was a wiccan: "An It Harm None, Do What Thou Wilt" Gotta say, it's pretty badass)

I remember Uwe from Last Bass Outpost getting one of those and showing us the pups, they were 6 pole guitar pickups as I recall.
I think the person we want chime in is Michael (Hillerup) as he likely can offer an opinion on your comparison. IIRC he has basses with both types of pickups.

Shall I add you to the club sir?

Had a great time with both Will and Louis yesterday! The room was full of boutique stuff, lots of coffee tables and players that had no trouble playing circles around me, so we Thunderbird folks were outnumbered. All kidding aside, Will and Louis are both really nice, down to earth guys, I had the pleasure of playing both of their basses (Lou has a Spector 'Bird and Will brought his 2016). The Ampeg guys were kind enough to bring an SVT down so I had a bit of fun with it and my '77.
It was a lot of fun. It's always loud, and there's always a whole lot of slapping and popping by people who are virtuosos. (I'm not a virtuoso and can't play one on TV.) All the boutique stuff didn't make me want boutique stuff, but it was fun to see. And, I got to play Mark's '77 for a bit. Its neck is just a hair chunkier than the later ones. I like it a lot. Plus, I really like the purple paint. The best part was seeing Mark and Louis.

There's a bass player in Japan who plays in a glam/hard rock (think Hanoi Rocks) band who has one...and is very attached to it. He's a cool guy and we've chatted a bit...in broken English/Japanese (thank you Google Translate)
That leaves one unaccounted for. Find it and there's a 100% survival rate. All those pickup truck ads that boast about how long they last? Hah! They can't match black Thunderbirds.
