Thunderbird Club

@Chucky Stiletti
Here’s the Fretless 66 tribute sound samples you requested. I just did a quick 20 second recording in each setting. I was watching a Bond film last night so I had this song stuck in my head.
First recording is as I would normally play it - neck vol full on and tone full up, bridge vol full on and tone full off, master vol at 50%

Second recording - higher key and fewer strokes to emphasize fretless effect - bridge vol full on and tone full up as you requested neck off, master at 50%
View attachment 7205696

Third recording - same key and settings as the last but slowed down to further emphasize fretless effect

Fourth recording - same key and speed but the neck vol on full and neck tone on max, bridge vol on full and tone on max, master at 50%

Again, all fingers and right hand over the neck pup, still no side dots or fret markers of any kind so please excuse the lack of precision (this ain’t a P bass).

Cool to hear the comparisons. And your intonation is pretty good. Side markers? Don't need no stinkin' side markers.

So after sitting with the modded '64 Thunderbird body with the added mudbucker I decided that I really don't like the added on and off switches, I wrestled with this because the bass had been in this configuration for a very, very long time. Today I cut a new pg for it and wired it up without the switches and am pretty happy with the results. I still need to age the guard but it looks so much cleaner without the switches. I am of course saving the original pg in case I want to switch it back. Curious what you guys think.
Had the switches been mounted from underneath I would likely have left them there. As it was, I think you made the right decision visually.

Bridge pattern and drill validation.

The dimensions I found online were off a full mm... or the bridge is.

Either way I have it right now.
85mm across the rear centers, 38mm from rear pins to front, and the front hole centers 15mm ahead of the scale ledger line.

Drill 2mm deep with 14mm, then 11.5mm to depth of the insert, plus a hair.

11.5mm didnt split very dry pine pounding in, so it shouldnt challenge mahogany. Flutes bit well.

Bridge fits nice and G saddle is right where I will want it, front to rear.

Now, to transfer the pattern to the body and mark it. Won't drill it until I am near done with finish sand so I don't change inset depth.

Progress.

Let’s do this! (The Strat is a gorgeous purple with gold hardware. The guitarist built and finished it.)
The subs under the stage were intense. The board was acting up and we had to dial the thunder down or we might have registered as a quake. Everyone said they could hear the bass!

Ok, so I’m awaiting delivery of my FIRST Thunderbird. What I *think* is a 2019 Vintage Pro. (And first Gibby style bass I have owned)
Collective: tell me what I’m “in for”
(I will scour the site for info also)

How are the stock Epi Tuners?

I run Roto SS 30-98 on my 4003w and those are killer for it.

What is a muscular roundwound meaty articulate string for a punchy finger style sound with these beasts? Are they better suited to larger gauges (40-105 ex)

Flats perhaps a better choice?
On other basses I like EB group 3, Cobalt, DM flats, labella LTF.

Tips to cope with the expected neck dive.
Etc :

TIA!
I’ll comeback with a NBD

Congrats!
My VP is a 2019. Solid player. Tuners are fine. If you like Angry Piano, get a set of Rotosound 66s (the long ones because of that headstock!) I liked them but the sound didn’t really fit what I play. Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats sound great on it.
The pickups aren't as bassy as most but still do s very good job.

Aha ! I love angry Piano!
So: a string with strong low-low mid output.
Perhaps:
Dunlop Super brights.
DR Fat beams (nickle)
Or similar to get more 00mph on the low end?

You’re in for a treat! That model bird is quite possibly one of the best Eppi ever built. Very highly regarded in this club. I love mine.

Maybe Power Flats.
Trust me. Have I ever given bad advice?

Never mind....don't answer that.

Yes, I would love to try some of those. Likely the top string I would like to investigate. All of my Ps have flats (except the '55 which has Power Wounds). I used my '58 P at rehearsal Wed and am always reminded how great Ps sounds with good flats. No cut through the mix--you punch through it.

I just got the deal of the year I think:

$1100 for the V4B head and SVT212AV cabinet. Both virtually brand new with only a couple of small dents in a couple of spots on the leading edge of the cabinet / head box faces.

I don’t even want any more amps/cabs but this was just too hard to pass on. Guess I’ll be selling one of my Orange AD200 heads and an OBC115 cab…
That's great! I like the head, but the box is super as well. Goes well with a lot of heads. And it light! Mine were both demos. Cab as a small dent no one notices. Shoot I'm don't even recall where it is now.

These heads are more aggressive (could say brighter tighter) than SVTs as I recall. Loud for 100w. It sounds fantastic if you can have a place to use it cranked and get the power tube compressing and breaking up. Tightens up and is wonderful.

Definite improvement. Mods on some classics can really bug me. Just don't look right. The mudbucker oddly enough fits (for me), the switches did bug me when I saw the first pics when you got it. I love that you fixed that. I'm certain it's happier.
