exactly, I don't mind rehearsing if it's gonna accomplish something....so many times were asked to learn material (forget rehearsing it) that never gets played...then there's the way people rehearse...I'm used to "bar 40, what are you playing at the end of the passage?".....not "let's go over the whole 3rd set"....fme, many view rehearsals as social outings...just don't have that kinda bandwidth these days ....
Agree. For the church service, we go over things on Wed. If a song sounded ok we move on. If singers or a player had a question we go over that part, not the whole song. Unless the whole song needed it. Work out endings and transitions, etc. Sun morning we run through everything, generally never going back over something again. But it can happen.

Yeah. Atmospheric river time. Rather have that than low forties and the fog we’ve been socked in with for almost two weeks in the south valley. Was up on the mountain Monday and Tuesday. When I left to go home, it was 67 at 2:00 PM. When I got to Bako, it was a miserable 45. Really weird.

I recall way back rehearsing with nothing on the calendar and you just hoped something would open up. That got a little old. But it was a time to learn some new songs. I was never good enough to just show up at most things and it be fun. Knowing songs well makes it more fun for me than worrying about what I'm not doing right or even close to right. I also recall a band a guy put together and invited me an a another guitarist I was in a band with for one outdoor event and thought it would turn into more. We learned a bunch of songs none of us knew, did the gig which went great. Never played them again.

I like rehearsals more if there is a point. But I would like playing songs I like with people I like in a basement even if no gig. I just like playing. I love the sound of a good bass. It's better with a good player, but I'm stuck with me so I take what I can get.
Ditto, dood.

We only rehearse Sunday before service. It’s expected everyone at least knows the gist of the songs by then. Whoever is leading each song gives any additional direction and we run through the set. If a section or transition needs work, we go over it until it’s good. It’s rare we go over entire songs again unless we’re struggling — or have time and just dig the song.

When I was a high school kid, we always had something most every weekend. There was very little competition for the school/church/youth dances. It was tougher when I was in college. DJs were becoming a thing at dorm and Greek parties parties. Heck. I even did music at some parties (I know, flog me) for beer money and all I could drink that night. It was a great way to meet girls….

That feeling when 'box 2 of 2' of Christmas arrives...
But FedEx tracking says the order's been at their Ohio facility for 3 days...

Rehearsals are a funny thing.

When I first started playing with other musicians, was in my late teens to early 20’s.
At that time I couldn’t say I was, “in a band”.

I just knew a lot of people who were just looking for a one night hired gun to do stupid short sets, or a one songer for a long night of battle of the bands.

Always original music.
I either learned the bass part they wanted me to play, or came up with my own on the fly.

Rehearsal?
You met at a studio or someone’s apartment in the village.

Heard the song, maybe sit through it twice, be ready for the gig.
That was it, I was fearless in those days so I didn’t care because I always pulled it off.

Next bout of gigging were my PDX days, again, all original music.
But this time I was in a proper band.
I muscled my way into being auditioned and told the BL I’m gonna be your next bass player, he kinda laughed at me.
Next i knew, he said your in.
He was kinda like an FZ sorta BL.
Play it right or your out.
Wound up writing 90% of the bass parts and even a few songs.

Only reason I loved rehearsing so much was not necessarily the comradery, but the musicianship.
And how everyone was in sync.

And you'll only get tight with at least weekly rehearsals. "Rehearsals" because you're rehearsing what you worked on since the last one. We have three new songs already since the album was released. Gotta keep fine-tuning them and improving. We'll be playing two of them at our set this Sunday. This is not the kind of stuff to wing it.

Totally relate. 👌

It's a family weekend. Finally got everyone out of their cases to put up on the DiamondLife rack. If it's not out, you won't play it.

Ken, was meaning to ask; have you had any issues or concerns with nitro staining from the DiamondLife hook covers?

I'm considering making some undyed cotton covers for mine, but not sure it is needful. Never had a problem with my Hercules hangers, but the DiamondLife instructions don't inspire confidence - they were written from a ""we cannot guarantee" perspective.

Understandable, but still...

My Christmas gift is a DiamondLife rack, of which the hooks have arrived so far.

Nice! I didn't have time to find out about the stock covers. I wrapped them with cloth tweed tape and capped the ends with rubber screw caps so nothing could get scratched.

interesting angle....for me it's "magic" when it's spontaneous and not practiced....some enjoy rehearsals, some view them as necessary evils, some don't care....again, depends what you're out for....I just wanna play bass.....

I like rehearsals because it is playing. I like show because it is playing. Moving gear is a pain, so there is that. Playing a show more than every four to six weeks gets wearing because of logistics, not because playing isn't always fun.
