Thunderbird Club

As a matter of fact Chucky I strung up my Greco II with EBCF a few days ago. Sounds Phenomenal! Best string I’ve tried on that bass yet.

Go For It!
I was a bit concerned that the D or A strings would be too short (they barely work on my VP with the hardtail) but no issues, I had to trim off a few inches on each string.
EBCF-- from other posts I was thinking it was some kind of special string set to accommodate an EBCF tuning until I saw the package--

my BaCH NR IV sounded soooo good at last gig with those chrome flats I'm getting tempted to swap a set of Boomers (thx Donnie) for a set of EBCFs (thx again Donnie) I have laying around on my 89 Greco IV.......does anyone have a Greco bird strung with EBCFs?...
My pleasure. You graciously fixed my old and beloved Phase 90. I came out way ahead my friend. Way ahead. Used that on all but one song Sunday. I love that little box.

Have you considered La Bellas. I hear they sound even better when an Italian plays them.;) Seriously, do you just want want a bright, modern flat? I don't have any DTFs that sound dead as some think. I find them very full with very nice clarity. No mud for me. Just wondering. Nothing wrong with the EBCFs. I would use them on something if I didn't have princess fingers.

I do have a new set of DTB but really curious to see a high mass flat like ECBF along with the Greco buckers.....

I thought ‘12 was about when they made the change to the thinner neck. That’s what is on the ‘14 LECS TV Silvers. It’s too bad they went back to the wider spec.
Newer Tbirds are wider? One reason i bought my first '19 was its nice, skinny neck. The Epiphone VP is a bit thicjer (not wider IIRC), and there was also a nice '15 but I believe it was thicker, too.

The standard bolt-on Epi reverted to the 1.73 nut around the time of the pandemic. The current Gibsons, both the NR and the Reverse, have 1.6 width nuts with set necks. The Epi 64s are the only remaining neck thru Thunderbirds.

My ‘15 Gibson has a 1.5 width nut. I don’t consider it thick.

Hey you guys, need some keen discernment here. I'm looking at a used Epi 64 and there's some finish cracking at the back of the neck near the headstock. Any thoughts on this?

The guy says it's been no issue, I'm inclined to believe him, but I'm just throwing this here for a casual look... He wants cheep money for it.

Why would poly crack like that? Those look like stress fractures.

I'm no expert, but there's enough going on to be concerning. I would only be interested if what you paid would be what you could sell the parts for--just in case. (Not at all hinting for you to say what you might pay, so no need to say.) Could be stress cracks in the finish, but there's enough going in different directions and lifting I would be scared of it unless you could do the above if it flexed or gave way. It's possible it's not a problem but it's a gamble on your end and I would pay accordingly in case it didn't hold. Super cheap and you can smooth it down and play an low cost. Assuming the headstock stays attached. I would treat it as worst case to be safe.

Irv will hopefully notice and comment. I would go with what he says.

My burst VP has some cracking but it doesn't flex much and strings keep it tight. I did drop some glue in there. It's been a non issue for years. This is the worst side, the other less so.

The dude's asking $200 for it.
Pickups, bridge, tuners...
If there's a break, I've got TiteBond and clamps. I'm going to see it Saturday, I did tell him I'd have to give it a good looking over before the handshake goes down. He seemed amenable.
He also said it hasn't given him any trouble. I'll go see it I think.
Thanks for chiming in you guys!

My 2014 Gibson Lizzie Hale Explorer in Alpine White had stress cracks at the neck/body joint. They were superficial- maybe it’s something do with that particular color?

To me, that seems like a fair enough price. My guess is that it took a fall. Hard to know what’s going on without removing the finish. If it doesn’t move when stressed, it could be fine. But you know that. If I wanted a ‘64, I would probably roll the dice.
