Depending on what you're after, desirable sounds can still be described in what could be taken as a negative manner. It's why a vocabulary in common is so useful.

For instance, I like some distortion but hate fuzz. Describing that will only make sense in a common framework. As long as we have a pretty good idea of what's meant, it's all good.

Considering there is fuzz, distortion and overdrive, and those 3 very different flavors of a clean tone break-up/down/manipulation encompass most of the pedals out there... choice is plentiful.

Is there a similar list that describes desirable bass tone (besides Thunderbirdesque or angry piano )?

A favorite of mine that is definitely indigenous to the 'bird, is "SNARL"!

Hey, quick one here, amidst our revelry- this just came to mind: Plan 9s original bass player, John Florence, is having some now-crisis-level chronic pain that's traveled, over many years, from lower back to hip. It's gotten very bad the last few years and has now become a kind of writhing, continual pain. He's on meds for it, but they are starting to interfere with his work (he's a computer guru), and feeding the family is coming into the enemy's crosshairs. He's also potentially playing bass as well as yours truly in the newly-reforming band, which might have been an entertaining conversation starter, but now of course that's also in doubt.

So I'm just writing to ask for some of that good Thunderbird Mojo to get sent out his way- he's going to a new doctor middle of Sept., and there's hope for relief- but till then any good vibes/prayers you can think out his way just might be a good thing.

Thanks thanks and thanks, we are holding out hope like we stole it.

Hey y'all! Been a while since I've visited, mostly due to my shame in being Bird-less for a couple years, but I was hoping I could get some advice about gig bags and cases? I've got a Mike Lull T5 coming to me sometime over the weekend or early next week, and would love to take it on a fly date. The problem is that it's coming to me in a Mike Lull Protec gig bag and I have no idea if it's in any way strong enough to survive the cargo hold of a plane if I can't get it on board and into an overhead. Does anyone around here have recommendations for a Mono or Reunion Blue style case for a Thunderbird? If not, then how about a company that makes SKB-style "flight cases" or an ATA case such as an Anvil or Keal?

I haven't used a VT, but when the BDDI came out in the late 90s I bought one, a d was fully disappointed with the low E farting out when it was dialed in to a geddy Lee type of drive, the other strings sounded fine but the low E first few frets were garbage. And this was on a jazz bass. Returned it. For a while I was just using an SD-1 with an eq to make up for the lost lows, before I figured out how to dial in the right od on my SWR bass350 itself.

You might want to add (to the chainsaw category) Jerry Only's wall of 70s acoustic heads (not 361s, they were the lower powered ones) dimed up with the mids on 11, all though to me it sounds a bit more like a leaf blower, a solid roaaarrrrr (yes that was a nod to blackies blower bass from voivod). Yes I blew a couple horns trying to keep the monitors loud enough for him to hear his vocals standing in front of his amp wall. 2002 misfits 25th anniversary tour.

all the descriptors of tones mentioned, though they can be seen as undesirable, are really just objective I think. They're just amusing ways to describe a character. All are desirable in the right context. What are you after to get an end result in the mix?

That sucks Larry - but frankly GC is bigger than each store and "going to corporate" shouldn't be as daunting as it sounds - you never know if you aren't the first to have an issue with either of those two guys. 'corporate' has a PR department and I can imagine they keep track of legitimate consumer concerns related to one of their stores. If there is nothing negative in that individual stores history, it may be harder to get them to address your issue. I mean, you know there are cases from the other side of the coin with unreasonable consumer concerns or someone trying to scam "the corporation". Trust me - I am no apologist for corporations (as in, "they are not people, my friend") but human nature being what it is also includes 'those-who-scam' across the board. As long as you have before and after pics, or any other documents of the issue (emails, dates when talking to the manager etc) and present it calmly and clearly - there is a chance it can be resolved to your satisfaction.

The bass is long gone and has been replaced with my second Studio V, an ebony beauty that sounds amazing, so I don't need to worry about it any longer but will remember the experience. If I ever need to have a "pro" work on any of my basses in the future, there will be lots of photos taken prior to me bringing it in. They'll be like hostage photos with the bass laid atop day of newspapers with the date easily seen.

Un/fortunately my days of shinning up drainpipes are well behind me. It was a useful skill when people locked themselves out of houses/offices and such.

I admit nothing about getting into placed that weren't officially accessible.
