It has been a week and I realize that I have not posted a concert review of Dream Theater - Images and Words and Beyond...

That was an incredible show - 3 hours in total. They are tight. I don't think I have ever heard a band play so well; I didn't hear any missed notes and they play at 100mph and always perfectly in time. The first set was the songs that you wanted to hear (well many of them; the catalogue is big) and the second set was all the songs from Images and Words. The encore was Seasons (which was intended to be on Images and Words).

Solos (what few there were) were short but incredibly well chosen and executed. For example, John Myung plays a short Jaco piece as the introduction to a song.

Instead of long solos they use the long instrumental passages well to highlight instruments in turn. They are incredibly versatile musicians, they played a couple of minutes of Enter Sandman - and play it better than Metallica. They also threw in little bits and pieces that are nods to fans and heroes. For example, they play about 8 bars from Cygnus X-1 - you would never know unless you were a Rush fan of a certain age (of which I think there were many in the crowd).​

I'd love to get a real Embassy. Pretty spendy for the real ones these days. I got the RI Chinese Embassy Pro a couple weeks ago. Made a clip on YouTube. Tried to like it, but just couldn't. The QC on this thing is comedy gold, but mostly, those 760 pickups are nowhere near the kinda TBird sound I'm looking for. Just made me want a nice TBird, so it's boxed up and headed back to Zzounds in the morning.

Bought off CL for $350 after being listed for a month before I saw it. Needs a neck repair but obviously worth that in parts.

Pretty sure those 760s are the same Chinabuckers that Steve of ThunderBucker Ranch did a side by side comparison with his pickups.



ThunderBuckers are clips one and three. Same bass, same strings, same fingers. Not bad for a guitord.

Myung was at Berklee when I was there (as was Vic Wooten). One guy I knew used to like to comment on John Myung's "good hair chops", as he was often seen tossing his long jet-black hair off his face in a great whipping spray straight up...

Yep still does that. I would enjoy doing that too if I could handle having hair like that.

Victor Wooten always impresses me. He looks ghetto but he is so well spoken. Any time I hear an interview with him I can't reconcile the voice and vocabulary with the look.

Funny, I just grabbed that exact picture to ask that exact question!

I've had the pleasure of chatting with Victor a few times here in Nashville. He's a sweet, generous, educated dude who happens to play the dog snot out of a bass...nothing even sort of 'ghetto' about the dude

Once the inserts are removed, you could damp the inside of the cavity with some wet q-tips and let it dry - That ought to expand the wood inside ever so slightly, so the inserts would fit more snug... In theory, that is...

I only get back on this thread maybe once a day or so, seems I'm always 8 - 10 pages behind so I've taken to just reading the last page I left off on and the most recent one due mostly to the amount of time I don't have to spend catching up. So if this has already been suggested apologies for the repeat. Anyway...

Had the inserts in my '07 Epi start working out, yeah you shouldn't have to deal with it but it's honestly a simple fix. Pulled them out, using a Q-tip I applied a light coat of Elmers Wood Glue inside the holes the inserts came from, put in 2 short pieces of flat tooth pick (using the neck as 12 o'clock, one at 8 and the other at 4) stuck to the side wall's. Coated each insert with a light coat of wood glue and using a small block of wood as a bruise block tapped them back in with a hammer. This was around a year ago and to date no further issues.

Figured by using a light coat of wood glue I might be able to get them back out again if necessary. Unlike a lot of folks I don't hate the 3-point bridge so unlikely I'll ever have to. But if so hopefully...

At practice tonight I was running my Traynor solid state head through my newer model Peavey Headliner cab and for most of the jam my cab sounded farty as hell, I thought I cracked the speaker and after jam I brought everything home for further inspection. At home I set everything up again and I couldnt get it to sound ugly at all, it worked as it should. Could it be the head?. If the speaker was cracked than it would always sound bad right?. Can a solid state amp get intermittent?.

NTM Bird accessory! I only spent 5 minutes with it as I'm supposed to be working (I'm allowed a break right?). It's SO much better than the previous pre/DI. It sounds really good as a clean preamp and then the saturation EQ slope controls means the drive sound is very natural. There's no mush or loss of note definition at all.

Cab wouldn’t fix itself unless something got stuck in a cone and fell out on the return trip. Is possible you had a bad connection, but probable the head could have and issues

Cab wouldn’t fix itself unless something got stuck in a cone and fell out on the return trip. Is possible you had a bad connection, but probable the head could have and issues

Im wondering about there being something loose in the cab that causes a vibration, that is one thing but getting brutal sound out of it?. Maybe the fuse in the head?.

Minor vibration could be the cab. By something loose in there i mean a bag of weed or a cat turd in the back of the cab.

If the head lost a fuse, it almost always will shut down/off

I found some info that stated that if the pickups were too close to the strings it changes the frequency and messes things up. If I find weed in the cab than bonus!
