I had an original one of those from whenever they were first issued, the neck was a wonderful, but that's where the love affair ended, I never could get a decent tone out of it - that, coupled with a G string that has less presence than a stripper's......It had to go, no regrets.

Ha! Sorry...I love this club for the general conversation and often forget the specificity of the club! That said, I’ll be posting more bird related stuff as soon as mine gets here. I’ve also saved a VP in a cart online. Hopefully, common sense will prevent me from pulling the trigger, though that’s not worked too well in the past

Lol good luck with that. This club has always been full of enablers. We, et al will always encorage the N+1 as the proper number of Birds(ok basses) to own. Lol good luck with that. This club has always been full of enablers. We, et al will always encorage the N+1 as the proper number of Birds(ok basses) to own. So you might as well pull the pin and get that sweet sounding VP.
Who knows, but I’m hoping I’ll wait till my Gibson arrives by (I’m assuming) bicycle courier. The seller told me he shipped on Friday, but I’ve yet to receive notice. Hopefully I’ll receive that notice tomorrow.
At any rate, I’m not typically the kind of bass owner to get one thing I like in different colors. I can easily see having multiple birds, but I want them all to bring something different to the table, soundwise. Which, in my thinking, having 4 makes perfect sense
Played a few different birds the other day at a music store. Oddly, none of the necks flung themselves to the floor and the 3 point bridges didn’t fly off and burst into flames when I tuned it up. No arm extension surgery required to play a low F. Maybe those were the 3 exceptions! I don’t find the ergonomics off putting in the least. Quite the opposite, in fact

I have 2 Gibson Thunderbird IV's, one 2008 wearing white, the other is a 2013 dressed in black. Both are stock. But the white 08 has an ebony fretboard. The 13 sounds more aggressive, and slightly brighter. But I would attribute this more to the pickups being slightly higher on it, and it has stainless steel coated strings, the 08 has NPS.
Point being, you can have 2 birds that have a different tone... and neck shape.
And that I honestly can't tell much of a difference, sounds wise, between the two fretboards, that are not covered up by pickup height. The way I look at it, your strings shouldn't be touching the fretboard to begin with, only the frets, so it shouldn't make much of a difference. But that's me and my crappy ears.
