Hipshot is such a cool company. Was quoted an extremely reasonable price on the mini clover leaf tuning keys, as I had a set of Ultralites and Detuner, but they had the full size clovers on them. They quoted a 2 week lead time, but I got them in 3 days. I also asked for a few stickers, and they sent me 22! Anyway, got the keys the other day and installed them yesterday. LOVE the look of these, and they compliment the Supertone bridge nicely!

Yeah, you can change just the cloverleaf part for the smaller ones. The beauty of good design!

So you already had Hipshot turners on it and just changed the coverleaf?

My Epi TB4 is going to get some new tuners sometime soon, too. A couple of them operate very roughly, like there are burrs and no grease in 'em. That's to be expected on a bass I bought at clearance for $199, and I've already had a preamp dropped in it, so replacing tuners is no big deal; its not going anywhere.

Maybe, maybe not...

I don't think the active Pro has anything it can loose, though - The active circuitry sound like s*** in my ears: way too boomy when emphasizing the bass and a lot of hiss when emphasizing the treble...

I was thinking of de-soldering the active harness and solder up a passive harness and just do an A-B test between the two with some jumper cables, before making it final...

If that doesn't work it will either go or get some new pickups, although I'd rather wait with that until I get a Pro-IV...

A new idea came up...

Since the Pro-IV & Pro-V have a 4 knob control configuration - I wonder how it would sound passive with two TBX tone controllers instead of regular tone pots?

Imagine emphazing a bit of treble on the neck pickup and a bit of bass on the bridge pickup, that thing could sound huge!!!

Cool! I'm not the last one on the T-Bird Club list anymore.

So I walked into the local GC and up on the wall was a 2014 Gibson Thunderbird!! Sweet I can see how close my classic pro is to the $1500 USA bass. Let me just say there is not a $1000 difference between the two. I was really surprised that they felt almost identical. The action on mine was way better of course! GC does a terrible job of setting up any bass here. Now don't get me wrong if money wasn't an option I would have walked out with it, but the classic pro is a great value.

Not that GC takes any pains on setups, Gibson is really to blame for that bass - their factory setup is the barest minimum to get it playable and out the door. I'm sure it doesn't help Gibson's sales!

So I walked into the local GC and up on the wall was a 2014 Gibson Thunderbird!! Sweet I can see how close my classic pro is to the $1500 USA bass. Let me just say there is not a $1000 difference between the two. I was really surprised that they felt almost identical. The action on mine was way better of course! GC does a terrible job of setting up any bass here. Now don't get me wrong if money wasn't an option I would have walked out with it, but the classic pro is a great value.

Who says GC does setups on hanging Axes. I think they just tag em', and hang em'.

A new idea came up...

Since the Pro-IV & Pro-V have a 4 knob control configuration - I wonder how it would sound passive with two TBX tone controllers instead of regular tone pots?

Imagine emphazing a bit of treble on the neck pickup and a bit of bass on the bridge pickup, that thing could sound huge!!!

So you already had Hipshot turners on it and just changed the coverleaf?

My Epi TB4 is going to get some new tuners sometime soon, too. A couple of them operate very roughly, like there are burrs and no grease in 'em. That's to be expected on a bass I bought at clearance for $199, and I've already had a preamp dropped in it, so replacing tuners is no big deal; its not going anywhere.

No, I had the stock tuners on it. I tried the full size clover leaf Hipshot tuners to see if I could live with the possibility them hitting each other sometimes. I could not, so I quickly took them off and reinstalled the stock ones. Rather than having the Ultralites sit unused, or sell them at a loss, I swapped the full size keys for the mini keys and threw them on again.

When I was first interested in getting a bass again in Jan of 2014, I found a Tobias Toby (Gibson owned, not really related to Michael Tobias anymore) that had a chip out of the headstock for a nice low price. I could live with the chip, but the neck was so back bowed it buzzed like a swarm of bees. Sales guy asked if I needed any help, and I said "If you guys will do a set up on this, I'll take it." He said "hold on a minute", and disappeared. Never found him again, and left without it. Turns out that was a good choice.

Apparently the guy that does repairs in GC is paid per job by GC, and is kicking in a percentage of what he gets on repairs to GC; he's sorta renting the space, as I understand it. No wonder they wouldn't set it up. I think they have some players working there, but nobody that knows how to wrench on stuff.

Just got home from practice, brought out the classic again, and man did it rip!
Guys loved it. D standard with the DR flats through my boogie 400 and 410...so much bottom end and punch, and the growl just ripped through the mix.
I had to stop for a smoke halfway thru the first set hell, we all did lol

I think that if I changed tuners I'd have to get the old style tuners with the huge backplate like the 76 t bird.

i'm not a fan of the tbird's bridge.......i'm contemplating an all nickel hardware route on my white bird. or maybe at least just a bridge replacement.

if i were to go the all nickel route, how deep in the pocket would i be (roughly)? bridge, tuners, p up covers?
