Couple random things.
Went to a pawn shop where I’d seen a Sunn Colosseum 300 for sale. It was tagged at $450, but they told me I could have it for $350 (no haggling required). At that price, worse case I’d flip it for a decent profit. They have tons of music gear at this pawn shop (more like a used music store, really). The salesman told me to grab a bass while he hooked the amp up to an Epiifany 212. I looked around and they had a Gibson GrabberII RI. It had tapes on it. Why can’t Gibson remember the originals when they make the RI’s? Sounds nothing like a Grabber and the headstock is seriously weird looking.

They wanted $1550 as it’s one of only 350 made. 350 more than they should’ve made if you ask me. If I found one cheap, I’d consider getting it, swapping the pickup and reshaping that headstock. I wound up grabbing an old Peavey Foundation to try with the Sunn.
First thing, very low output. Master dimed, gain and eq’s all set at noon. Not very loud at all. Discovered if you barely add eq, the volume goes WAY up, so I put all the eq’s at 2 o’clock. Way louder, but not close to what I expected. The salesman was pretty surprised to. I asked if I could try a different bass and he handed me a mint condition 1968 Fender Jazz. Awesome bass, even though I’m not a J dude as a rule. The volume and low end doubled on the amp, simply by changing basses. I played around a couple minutes and said “I’ll take the amp.” Then I turned off the amp and...it wouldn’t turn off! Light went off, but you could still hear signal and the fan was still running. With both volumes off, he unplugged the amp. He told me he’d take it to their tech and have him replace the on/off switch and give the amp a once over. If I’m cool with the results, I can still get the amp for $350
I really do like these amps, despite their quirks. Tons of eq, but it sounds great with everything at noon, so highly tweakable. Kinda neat
I had a 74 Grabber (which I should never have sold- but the offer was just too good). It was super light and roared- great rock bass.
I have a 74 Ripper which I love- the Ripper reissues were disappointing IMO
I was disappointed in the pickup in the Grabber reissues and didn't bother there either.
I did buy a G3 reissue and it has a voice of it's own- strangely similar to a Rickenbacher.
I read that as a September 1, 2018 delivery at first, and was like, "RedVee seems suspiciously OK with this..."
I use Schallers on everything. I know some folks don't like them but I have never had a mishap.
Oh, I do have Dunlops on my Ripper- they were on it when I got it and I haven't taken them off (need a really short screw driver to get in at the one on the inside of the upper bout. They seem to work good too.

IIRC $300 was the going rate for the first gen SS Coliseums when I was buying them in the mid to late 70s. They sure seem to have added a lot of doohickeys along the way or is it an 880 kind of Coliseum? If you can get the sound of a first gen out of it that's a great price. I almost bought a close to mint first gen SS Coliseum Bass last year. Then realized I'd like to experience one again but certainly didn't need to own one...Enjoy!Not really n+1. I do have more amps than I need and a couple I’ve been too lazy to get serviced. I have a GK MB800 that konked out a couple years ago. Need to get that fixed and sell it. I have a Carvin BX1600 that works, unless you slam the input too hard, then something is wrong. I keep it in the shop to test cabs. There’s a couple dead power amps laying around too. maintenance on amps ain’t exactly my forte :/
So, I have a fair amount of amps, but not a ton. Mesa D800, M9, Reiner pre/Crest poweramp, Traynor yba 200-2. That’s not excessive!!!

I love Grabbers, Rippers and G3’s. Of the reissues, the G3 was the only one I considered. You’re right, they have a sorta Ric thing going.
The Colosseum 300 does have a lot of ‘doohickeys’ like contour, ‘compression’ and silly amounts of eq, but it’s well laid out, everything sounds good at noon, etc. Not a fussy amp to dial in. I dunno, maybe I’m just in a mood to go back to classic stuff and see how they stack up to my memory of them.

It's a little known fact that Leo 7ender used Precision as a last second replacement name. He had planned to call it the Paisley Bass all along, until Bob Paisley threatened a big fat hairy lawsuit over the use of trade dress.

I think year, month, day is the best way to do it, because then it is easier to keep track of as a file name. I'm not even a computer person.

Paragon Loan&Co, I’m pretty sure. It’s in the Antioch area. Kinda near Harding on Nolensville Rd. Used to be a music store called Tusculam Music. Super nice folks
The guy who fixes my amps says the class D units tend to limit themselves into shut-down as a failsafe of sorts. They don't handle hard transients well- he's got a regular customer, bass player, who's brought his GK MB800 in a few times because he's a pretty manic, very physical player, and he kept shutting it down during a set. The guy's gone back to his 1001RB apparently.
