Ok, NOW I'm done thinking about strings and pickups for the night...same clip, except the second bass is the '02 Gibson, strung with Cobalt flats

Nice! Yeah, I don't think I'd be into those Cobalt Flats. They all sound great, but I really like the sound of the 2014 with Black Beauties. You said these are all with just the neck pickups?

In the next test you need to add in some RS66. :)

Again similar, but I like the Cataldo and the '14 better now, the lower notes aren't quite as nice (to my ears) on the flats. Are you using a pick?

I really should try RS66's at some point! It's my understanding that the KS Bassburners aren't that far off from RS66? Not sure, been awhile since I've run Roto's, but I need to try em again. I'm glad to get to hear the Cobalts...not convinced they're the right strings for what I want out of this bass. They do sound BIG, but it might tame the growl and clank a bit too much for me.

Yes. Used a pick on all 3...I think 1mm Tortex?

You definitely should. I'd like to hear your thoughts on them compared to the Ken Smiths. The KS are just too hard to find to make it worth using for me, plus I didn't like how they fit at the tuning pegs.

I totally agree on the Cobalts. Just not my taste.

With Derek Hoke and Eskimo Brothers I’ve been playing the ‘14 w/ Black Beauty’s and with Mike Lynch, I’ve been playing the ‘02 w/ Sunbeams. I tried the Cataldo for my two gigs Saturday and it was awesome too. Gonna try the Cataldo w/ Mike Lynch this week. May try the ‘02 w/Cobalts on the gig with Derek tomorrow. I’ll play a little throughout the day and decide, but it’ll be one of the Gibson’s. I know I love the Black Beauty’s on some things, the rest is still open for experimentation :)

Decided to do some direct clips for the heck of it. I played along to a prerecorded Prayer Flags track, but favored the bass pretty heavily. All Three basses went through the Reiner 6SL7 tube pre, straight into Logic. No EQ, No Compression...I explain which is which on the sound File

Haha! I don’t think it’s a ‘which one wins?’ situation as much as just trying stuff and noting the differences :)

Agreed. I'm listening through Alessandro MS-1 headphones.

I had him cranked up a bit through my stereo, I didn't like the low end with flats as well as the others, a bit "flubby" not as tight. The Cataldo and the '14 had clarity and definition to my ears (I like that). The '02 sounded better in the first clip to me.

Shoulda done blind testing to find out whether the TB63 still wins (for me). @Gaolee had them about right.

There’s no way I was gonna be able to pull off all the things needed to do a science based double blind test. That’s fine for me, as I wasn’t looking for a ‘winner’ so much as different samples. To shoot for a winner kind of assumes we’re all going for the same thing and I’m sure glad we aren’t :)

I like toggling back & forth between the samples, comparing sounds. I'm glad Carlo mentioned that (and ashamed I hadn't thought of it myself:rolleyes:) Those Cobalts sound "plump"

Great observation, thanks!
There’s so many variables here. I enjoy looking at the differences. Not everyone likes flats. Some folks prefer em. I like em when I like em. They weren’t my favorite in this clip, because they tamed certain aspects of my bass I’d prefer not to tame. That’s where the Black Beauty’s are a great middle ground kind of string for a lot of my gigs. That’s really valuable to me. My best hope is these clips will be helpful for different needs.

Well... having not seen his specific helmet, I can't say for sure... but odds are pretty good that my head already bares a striking resemblance...

It’s a magnificent helmet. The most majestic helmet ever conceived
