Funny thing is that I'm not a pick player, so I have to translate the sound and attack you get to what I would sound like. But, the Black Beauties, which I like very much, were my least favorite strings in those clips. Somehow, they got a little dark and maroon by comparison with the others. For sitting in a mix, they are perfect. For being aggressive and out front, the others were more appropriate. What I like about Cobalt Flats is that they sound a whole lot like rounds, but last a long time, like flats. Black Beauties and other coated DR strings have a similar quality. Cobalt flats sound most like an angry piano to me. There's a bit of orange that creeps into the sound sometimes.
What's great is that we all are hearing the same clips and hearing slightly different things.
It’s the nature of these sorts of ‘tests.’ Which aren’t really tests at all. Just some dude playing bass. The attack can be different and skew perception, one track could be a half dB louder and therefore, ‘better.’ Lots of factors. And yes, pick vs fingerstyle can change the whole perception of a string, as you mentioned regarding Black Beauty strings. Since I’m primarily a pick player, I just went with what I do. I should consider doing some clips both ways though, if that would be helpful. I just started doing these clips to have more resources. There really aren’t tons out there. What does NOT interest me is ‘shootouts,’ ‘this’ being better than ‘that.’ It helps me figure out things I like, but I have no interest (or qualifications) to tell someone else what they should like. I’ll just make the clips
