I think I figured out the problem.
When I was playing around the seventh fret on the E and A, the strings were just very lightly clipping the frets around the fourteenth and slightly choking the note off. What had me beat was the neck looks true and no frets appeared high.
I did notice quite a lot of travel in the E and A strings. I decided I would change strings and see if that helped. That set had been on for a while. I have always kept Gibson strings on this bass since I bought it new. Not sure why, I just did.
I didn't have any, so I put a set of Fender pure nickel 7150 rounds on. They are what I generally run on my Fenders, I love the feel and sound of them on my P Basses.
Issue gone. I do like the sound of the Fenders better on the T Bird. Happy day.

Thanks. That one is top of the line: blocks, transparent cherry stain, raised center, ThunderBucker EX5 pickups, Hipshots. It's $2195 with case, including shipping.

The Fiver version of the MAX with dot neck, solid color paint, one piece bridge, ceramic Humbuckers starts at $1295 delivered. It's the 5 string version of this bass.

Thanks, it's Inverness Green metallic. That picture doesn't do it justice. It looks more like this but varies depending on the light.

The one on the left I picked up at GC on Friday. It has been played a lot but is very solid and sounds great. The kill switch is gone and there are 2 volume controls in it's place. Gives the usual range of sounds from a TBird, but a little leaner sounding. I haven't had time to compare it side by side with my regular ebony Bird from the same year yet. I did compare it to my clean BlackBird and they sound almost identical, but you can adjust the pickups on the new one. I wouldn't be afraid to play this one in a club where I really want to keep the other one clean. I still need to adjust it and oil the fretboard but so far so good :bassist:

I was just looking at a Blackbird on ebay...not helping man!

J/k...I did realize that if I pick the blackbird up it will be my 4th tbird.

Strange thing I noticed is that lately my other basses have begun to attract films of dust. Not so much the tbirds though. They're strangely dust-repellent :thumbsup:

I think it might be a sign...

Currently building a custom Fender-bird style bass ( full thread on the Luthier section ).

It's a sapele body, with a burr elm/beech top.
Jazz bass maple neck with black block inlays
Transparent blue lacquered top, with black ( or dark blue ) sides/back.
Hipshot A bridge
Pickups, as yet undecided

central raised section isn't glued in place yet as I still have to rout the pickup cavities and neck pocket.

I've played with the pickup placement slightly.
Neck pickup 1/4" further from neck ( to tighten up the sound?) Bridge pickup 1/4" further from bridge ( slightly warmer? )

I'm thinking about buying one tomorrow.
Guitar Center order...hey, I have over half its price on a GC gift card.
One good thing is, when it arrives at the store and it isn't perfect, no problem returning it for another.
Tried the gold Anniversary issue Gibson T-bird there today...bit out of my reach now, but it sure was nice.
I've been without a Thunderbird for nearly a year!
