Thunderbird Club

Had a band practice last night and the La Bella SS worked out really well. The guitarist said he's never heard me so clearly. It's entirely possible that's mostly due to my turning up the high-mid knob, which I did at home and loved. And the guitarist was trying a different amp. But I do still think the strings had something to do with it. One interesting thing, which I'm not really concerned about, is that I had a lot harder time getting harmonics to ring out with the La Bella over the Rotos. It's possible I was being too heavy-handed, but I never seemed to have an issue like that with the Rotos. But like I said, I'm not really concerned about it because I use harmonics once, in one song, briefly.

What model strings, you talkin’ here, Ken?

Hi, I was thinking of getting Epiphone Thunderbird Vintage Pro, it doesn't seem to be on sale over here yet. The thing that was worrying me though is that the pickups look different on it.

I was wondering if anyone has played one as if the pickups are as good as the older models?

I think it depends on who you ask. I don’t own a VP, but I’ve played one. Pretty cool! I still prefer my ‘02 and ‘14 Gibson’s, but I may be in the minority there for all I know. Lots of people absolutely love the new VP pickups. Regardless, they’re a lot of bass for the money

La Bella Stainless Steel (M45). That's simply what they're called now. Used to be called Hard Rockin' Steel.

Gotcha, thanks!
Be interested in trying em, but I know we have slightly different taste in strings, because you didn’t care for Lo Riders and I love em. I bet there’s a string out there we both love though, since we have very similar tastes in music

That would be interesting to find, but yeah, it's likely we just have slightly different taste in strings. I've likened my taste in strings to my preference in headphones: I need very crisp highs. I picture it like the sharp point of a needle, where with headphones that don't thrill me having that sharp point rounded or dulled. There's a certain sharp cutting I have come to like from certain strings. I'm thankful for all the sets I've tried, which have really helped me hone in my tastes.

Congratulations, Mike! That is one beautiful bass and I'm so glad to hear that the neck is to your liking and that you find it to be very playable with no hand issues. Love the color as well!:)
Thanks Lar!:D

At this point, I have become mystified by this thing. It's about as ergonomic as a coffee table, and the neck is half the size of what is normally most comfortable for me, but for some mystical magical reason... I can play & play without any of the pain, cramping, or "locking up" that I've experienced from guitars and basses for the past 25 years! I'm at a loss for words...

No Pain No Gain ain't what it's cracked up to be!
Thanks Lar!:D

It loves you!

I have done almost 800 miles in a day on a sportbike. It was fun, but I don't recommend that kind of mileage on a regular basis. 400 isn't too bad, but it is time consuming and hardly a short commute.

My long distance driving days are over. Last long drive was September, from SC back to NYC. I lasted about an hour and a half before i couldn't take it anymore. And my cousin said, no stopping, we're going straight through. Wanted to strangle him!! Took me two days to recover.

That is the model I am looking at buying. I will probably stick some Ernie Ball Power Slinky on it.
I ordered the ebony from Andertons in July last year and got sick of waiting in January, so I cancelled it and bought a sunburst which had just come into stock at GAK. The pickups are great - different from the TB plus ones on my classic pro, but in a good way. I think they give more clarity at the top end and more growl elsewhere. I would heartily recommend buying one as soon as you can!

Strings are one reason I'd be scared to change pickups at this point. I've done all my testing on the TB+ and am at a really happy point. Not sure if with different pickups I'd almost have to start over.

There is no reason to change pick ups if you like them. If anything, it requires obtaining an additional bass to house the "new" pick ups for testing.....
