Thunderbird Club

I'm on a tight budget but I'm looking at the Bass Soul Food. Opinions? I come here as opposed to the pedal forum because I'd like other Tbird players opinions. So be gentle.
What are you wanting in terms of the sound effect? When I got mine I was looking for a gritty overdrive. By itself in the store (And through an Orange 4 Stroke and Orange 410 cab) it did that. It's got a nice, warm tone. In my band, though, against a hundred watt head and 412 cab with high gain distortion and tuned to drop C, it disappeared. I sold it and replaced it with the MXR M85.

Thanks, I'm not really looking to dirty things up. Between the Gibby pickups and the GK head it's got that in spades, more I'm looking for a clean type boost that livens up the top end a little. Honestly? I'm not sure what I want. I've got an SCR-DI, I'm mixed on it, little too scooped for me, and the Behringer Sansamp clone which is just mud.
I've got my first real gig with my new band start of April so I'm getting nervous. Sound will be FOH , no onstage amps. Recommendations on a good Di would be appreciated also.

Are you happy with the MXR overall?

We have rarely had a sound man(lack of space/money)so I'm my own sound guy-my PA.When we've had a sound man-3 or 4 times-I put my settings where I want 'em and hope for the best-also that the kick drum volume doesn't overshadow everything.:bassist:

Absolutely. Love that nasty thing. Bear in mind that this band is a post-grunge heavy rock outfit. Think "Stone Sour doing Alice in Chains covers at Alter Bridge's practice room." I wanted more of an actual distortion rather than an creamy overdrive type of tone, which is exactly what the M85 does in a couple different ways.
The Bass Soul Food is kind of a warming type of pedal. A heat lamp for your soul food.

For clean boost, I have heard good things about
T.C. Electronic - Spark Booster Pedal

I like this to fatten up the sound a bit, but like all compressors, any noise in the signal chain gets amplified
Electro-Harmonix - Bass Preacher Bass Compressor/Sustainer Pedal

Thanks for the description. I think I want more of the Soul Food type sound than hard edged distortion. I have a EHX English Muff'n that I have tested in short doses. Seems to get too aggressive at certain points. Need to play with it more. I know there are bass mods for the Muff'n so I should consider that before giving up on it.

Yeah, amongst other things. Like a Lull or a Sandberg. Or maybe a Dbird. For now I'm trying to keep it cheap. Car needs a state inspection and there's that pesky check engine light.....

Snow storm in Indianapolis...car just spun out in front of us on the interstate...close call
