There's been a ton of banter about Gibson's QC and rightfully so in some cases, but this 2014 has been terrific once I got it setup properly. The finish and construction were flawless. I've been wanting one for the last 20 years, tried a few, but never kept them. To finally have one good enough to start drilling holes in, that's something special. I don't mind the inlay either, I don't get people complaining about it.

Gibson has been pretty stodgy with colors for Thunderbirds for a long time, the '60s were the decade of many choices, since then black, white, s/b, natural, ebony stain. (post'88) cherry, walnut stain and natural burst. Presently I think they still have s/b, cherry and walnut.
Limited production included a Zebrawood, Goth, and two editions on the Nikki Sixx.
I've probably missed some, so feel free to chime in - I have a couple custom painted 'Birds, Gibson should give us some better choices on finish and hardware.

I've grown to dislike the sunburst thunderbirds. There's too much!! The only production thunderbird i wish i had from gibson would be my dad's gibson blackbird. Sadly, he sold it many years ago. But i do have his dearmond starfire special guitar which he got after he sold the blackbird. He said it was the best sounding bass he ever owned. Loud and simple.

I thought the gold Birds were ugly when pictures first turned up online. When I saw one in person it changed my mind. I'm surprised how much I actually like the looks now. I HATE gold hardware but I think it adds to the overall look of the bass in this case. My wife gave me one for my birthday last year and it's a really nice player. The sunburst is probably my least favorite TBird finish for some reason but it looks so classic in that finish. But....if I were looking to buy a Bird and the burst finish was all that I could find, it wouldn't keep me from buying it at all.

Basically what I ordered, except they're $549 in Canada. The first thing I'll be doing is breaking up that giant wash of white with a black PG. Then, either chrome covers with black rings, or just adding chrome rings. I haven't decided yet. Then, a black Hipshot bridge with chrome saddles & screws. :D
