Never been a Hartke fan. Just not my sound. The newer Hydrive cabs (I think that's the name) sounded much better than the all aluminum TO MY EARS. I have known people that love the all aluminum speakers and I have no problem with that. But I don't think Hartke makes ANY amp that will be louder than an SVT Classic. Even if you don't like SVT's, and some people don't, it's hard to argue with the sheer force that comes from a large, loud tube amp. i have an SVT 3Pro, an old MTI era SVT, and a Genz Benz STM900 Streamliner. The Genz is louder than Hell, but the SVT FEELS much more powerful. I like all three for different reasons. When I start playing out again I will more than likely use my 3Pro becasue I really like the sound and it isn't overpowering with volume. The Genz would be my second choice because its light and would fit on smaller stages.

I guess this is the long way of saying that a sound man isn't going to tell me what gear to play just because it makes his job easier. Make yourself happy with your sound. If the SVT isn't right for you I'm sure you would be able to trade/sell it for something that fits better.

I picked up a Hartke cab with the aluminum speakers and a Trace Elliott head on the cheap from a guy needing cash several years back. I could not stand that cab. Those aluminum speakers had a tone that was not very pleasing at all to me. I flipped it a few weeks later. Then again, I also bought an all original 1971 Ampeg V4B from that same guy. It had once belonged to the bass player of The Kentucky Headhunters. It sounded great, but I was afraid of it breaking and costing a lot of money, so I sold it on eBay to some guy in Arizona.

Not to state the obvious... Buy from GC, then sell the cabinet?

When I asked about them selling me the head only, they told me that if they had just one person ask for just the cabinet, they'd sell it and then the head would be up for sale. But no one ever has. That means that there is likely no real demand locally and then I'd be stuck storing yet another cabinet

No, I'm the other guy! But John was there, actually played most of the set, as he was involved with Plan 9 from the beginning, right up to the Ham and Sam Jammin' record.
He's ace, good people and a great player.

This has been at my local GC for a couple of months only because they won't sell me just the head w/o the cabinet. If I'm going to lose a GAS item to someone, it should be a TBer

It's a lot less than 2.5k! I've played it and can tell you that it sounds sweet with both bass and guitar!

That's similar to the black one I had. The 6GB6 circuitry was changed after 63. I could never get the sound as I remembered it from the black one. If you look up 62-63 Bassman's, they're $2-3K.

Amps and what they do, and what impresses us about them is all such subjective stuff. Go with what makes you feel at home.

+1 to that. It’s all subjective. Yes there’s a difference between tubes and SS. Both great. Just find the one that works for you.
I’ve had both of various brands throughout my years. And the only one that didn’t fit the bill was a Hartle LH 1000. Not knocking it, just didn’t work for me. I have yet to play through a “bad” tube amp.

I have noticed this too (at the big shows). The only guys with amps on stage are the ones with an endorsement. And when you look carefully, there are no heads, they are empty cabinets, and/or they are always on standby. Whereas in my misspent youth, I liked seeing a wall of Marshalls on the stage, I now like the clean stage. But more important, because all the sound is coming through front of house rather than from the stage, the sound at concerts is so much better.

Depending on the sound man! They sit there with their headphones on-fine(I guess) for getting the balance, but take them off once in awhile to hear what the audience hears.

Empty Marshall cabinets for the visual have been a thing for a long while. A lot easier to move around and stack.

I mentioned doing that with Rumbles, DI'ed to the FOH, on Rumble club and was chastised about"hiding"the Rumble. Whether it's you or the stage crew, who gives a rats "tail", if it's easier to move.

I do like a Firebird but if there was ever a guitar that sounded less like it looked that is it and it sounds great don't get me wrong

I go the other way with that. I don't like these modern stages. I am an absolute gear junkie! I love seeing a poorly lit stage with gear everywhere. I hate 200 foot tall video screens & bare stages. It makes everything seem all fake & "Hollywood". As a musician, I want my gear on stage with me too. I can't imagine it otherwise. Not in a live situation anyway.
